What is a core charge?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section. Feel free to move it if it is. I'm still getting the hang of this. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm seriously considering getting a vmax ported throttle body for my 2012 LFX. Only thing is, when I go to order one, it has a form and some check boxes or forms (not sure what to call them), and on one of them is a box for a "core charge" and it says "core charge - $150.00 (refundable). Can someone please explain this to me?

You are supposed to return your old part which is in turn used to make the part that will be sold to someone else. You have to pay the extra $150 in case you don't send your old one back as it costs them money to not have another part to work with. Send your old one, you get the $150 refunded to you.

From google:

One thing that you will learn when working on your own car, or buying car parts is about the "core charge". Basically, when you buy certain car parts like brake rotors, alternators, brake calipers, distributors and even engines they have a "core" - in reality all of these parts are made of many valuable components and even though some aspect has failed, this doesn't mean the whole part is junk. The core charge is basically like a bottle deposit, but in this case, its a car part deposit that encourages you to recycle! So when you swap the new part for the old, you return the core and it goes back to the part manufacturer for rebuilding and recycling.

for what it's worth

I've mainly come across them with alternators. That way, the company can use the parts and rebuild and recondition them.

A trick with good is to put the word "define" in front of what you are looking for.
