Nitrous Bottle Explodes, Kills Crewmember @ ADRL Race

somebody mentioned this on my local forum:

Copied from ADRL web site: "In a moving pre-race ceremony, ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling remembered Mike Walker, a co-owner of Blake Housley’s Pro Nitrous team, who was critically injured this morning in the pit area of the ADRL Georgia Drags at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Walker was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Memorial Hospital of Adel in nearby Adel, Georgia."

That is all that has officially been released from ADRL. Word is that he was checking the pressure on a bottle that was in a heat bath when it exploded. Anyone that uses nitrous needs to remember what they are dealing with. Those bottles have a lot of stored energy in them and when something goes wrong it is usually in a bad way. I will be curious to find out more details of this accident. I have heard that it was a carbon fiber bottle but I would like to know how old it was and if it had ever been heated using a torch. Maybe something can be learned this tragedy to prevent others from the same thing. Just be careful with the bottles guys.

We went to the races yesterday after the rain let up enough for them to dry the track. There were no more details floating around at the track. I they were all still pretty shaken up by it (understandably so) and did not want to talk about it.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and teenage daughter who he leaves behind. I will echo the thoughts of the poster, these are pro's and still things go bad wrong. Be careful out there.

Whoa. That is really bad news. Nitrous has always been a little more on the dangerous side and that is just terrible a bottle let go. It is very rare, especially with the sheer number of bottles out there, but it does happen.
Condolences to the family and team.

That,s very sad and tragic. I have seen nitorus bottles get away before in the pits and had to run for cover. Scary moments. I have crewed on several difffernt teams in the past and still crew on a pro street now. The drag racing community is a very tight family and it's very sad when we lose one of own. My thoughts are with the fellows family and crew members.

Never putting that stuff in my car. It pretty much turns your car into a Hindenburg on wheels.

Prayers are with that man's family and may he RIP.
