L99 AFM -- It's REALLY a tough choice, for some. Step Inside.
Soooo....with the L99 we get an "Eco" engine thats only rated about -20 HP over the regular LS3. And, we get an auto with "optimized" shift points that BEATS that same engine by a 10/th or so in 1/4 mile times. And, we will get BETTER economy for those that will drive it daily, and not look for the next "Stang to beat." : -p
For those that ALREADY drive an auto --- would you be willing to learn a manual, and get that extra 20 HP, and be more open to the modifications that can take it to 500+ HP? Yes, the manual is more "fun," and it takes a steady discipline to get the rev-matches and "short-shifting" right. And, the manual LS3 WILL eventually beat the "projected" automatic times in the end, with a great driver. But until then, if the PRICE is equal, or LESS than the LS3 manual, is it worth getting the "guzzler" over the "green V8?" I am sincerely torn over the options Chevy have given me. I guess it boils down to: Can the L99 be modified, while retaining the AFM features, to meet the LS3 mods? I've been saying for a long time - that while I'd prefer to finally own and learn a stick - if the auto can hang with the "mods," why bother with a stick??????? Please, let's not get into a "automatic is for poozies" discussion -- I've been there. Let's discuss the fuel savings, the performance, and the "mod-friendly" factors. I'm still leaning towards the manual LS3. But, I need some discussion that legitimately talks me OUT of the L99 Auto. What do you die-hard gear-heads have to say? :seesaw:

I like the auto, so there won't be any talking me out of it. It just fits my needs better.
I believe the LS3 cam-swap is not possible with the L99. Aftermarket is already available for the LS3 and the L99 is not established yet, so that might be what you want.

worse comes to worse, if a cam swap would negate the AFM, so be it. port the heads, throw a cam and some headers and a CAI at it. and keep that auto on top.

Again, its a TOUGH choice. From these replies, the L99 AFM is TOUGH to beat........
I'm guessing if you want to mod, the AFM L99 is NOT what you want. BUT..................

Spike is da Chevy Engine Man. "..A True HotRodder wouldn't be content untill he had created a car so violent, so totally sick, that the act of dropping the hammer would result in instant death. Anything less results in the need to go -- faster. "
I hear ya, it's too early to tell, regarding the "mods factor." Until then... I will be

danke. as ive said before, the only time you have too much power is when you are busting the wheels loose at idle... even tho that goes against my other saying of it doesnt matter how much power you have if you cant get it to the ground. lol

If you want an easy rider, get the auto.. If you want to row gears and have more fun while driving, get the manual. It doesn't matter if one is a tenth faster or slower, you will not notice the difference unless you are the type of person who takes the car to the drag-strip.

From my experience there is a way to have both. It's called N20. A dry system will set you back about $500 and can be installed in an afternoon. Most V8s can handle a 150hp and can be activated only at WOT. I have seen many cars making over 600hp using autos. I believe this will give you everything you want. It will give you great HP, everyday driveability and you can have the auto.

Well the paddle shifters will take care of any fun you might want to have. In stop and go traffic you won't want the manual. 20hp isn't a big deal, a CAI and tune should get you there.

As far as moding an afm engine, I would look at Charger forums. The R/T comes with Dodges equivelent system, mds. That should give an idea of what can and can't be done the system. Or go to G8 forums, but they haven't had as much time to play as the mopar guys have.

I heard its easy to turn off the MDS, you hook a Diablo/computer up and have somebody know what there doing to it for you, shouldn't be to hard with the L99 Hey whats sounds better: Chrysler's Muti-Displacement System or Gm's Active Fuel Management

I am also torn with this decision because of course I want my HP and decent gas mileage but I love driving manual and honestly get bored with an auto but im not a hater and open to all options. If the L99 has fuel savings greater than 30mpg I may just go with it but if it in reality only gets a few more than the LS3, im fine with 23mpg and im sure I can squeeze a few more from it.
