* addendum *

Car was operating fine last night. 20 minutes, a couple of on/off cycles and the problem went away.

For those that suffered a (temporary) failure; has the problem surfaced a 2nd or 3rd time ??
My EPS failure occurred at 560miles and never happened again. I have no idea what causes/caused this incident. After a 20min power down and I jiggled around the power leads(doubt it did anything)...all is well now at 5800 miles.

In a 'blond' moment, I thought about looking under the car to see if P/S Fluid may be leaking...

No Power Steering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were just leaving to go out to dinner and pulled out of the drive way and bamm!!! No p/s..turned the car off and restarted three or four times and no luck.
Pulled it back in the garage and checked all the fuses and just when I was going to get my truck out I thought I would start it up one more time.
Started it up and all was fine..I now have p/s..150 miles on it..
Kinda of sucks with such low miles.
I took it out to dinner and everything worked just fine.

dcosta. Don't like hearing stuff like that, and bet if/when you take it in they won't find anything and all will be working. You won't be able to recreate the problem. Drives me crazy when I hear something like this. Hopefully someone will have an answer.

We always had the answer before the importance of fuel usage was arbitrarily jumped a few places up the list of vehicle design considerations.

What we're seeing here is that some cases of "CTRL-ALT-DEL" or escape of the magic smoke involve a whole lot more risk than others. It's only a minor nuisance when it involves your laptop or some appliance that stops working . . .

As it is an electric power steering assist, and the problem is intermitant, I'd check the wiring diagram for something along the lines of a safety that checks for a certain voltage being supplied to the EPS, and if the voltage is low, it doesn't supply any at all. That would be my guess.

2nd occurrence just now. Cycling on-off immediately didn't seem to help. Shut 'er down for a minute or two, started 'er up again and then the EPSA was restored.
Where is this (possibly loose) clip that was mentioned in an earlier post - I'd like to give it a try.

there is a thread here somewhere with pictures. where someone re-routed the electrical wire that connects to the steering rack. he modified some bracket or something because he felt it was going to slice the wires.

Fwiw, we haven't seen this issue with any of the ZL1's we built yet.

Human nature is to not note regularity, but to only note irregularity. While this thread is full of small issues, let this post represent at least 50 cars running smoothly. No need to really worry about this issue, but if it does pop up GM will get it sorted.

Just wanted to save some gray hairs.

I'm not sold on it being a software problem yet. It could be a loose connection or bad ground or some other hardware problem. I remember reading some causing it by trying to move the ground wire during their cai install. Software problems can be duplicated using the exact same steps...but identifying those steps can be challenging.

I will say i checked out that wire harrness a few members had to mess with due to rubbing when i changed my oil and mine had an updated looking bracket/ harness clip that held the wire away from the edge. Also, the factory harness had 3 layers of protective conduit/ heat wrap for protection. They must have changed the way they run that harness some point in production or somthing.

Happened Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boy this could get old.
We were just getting home from a hour drive and just as we get to the house
bamm!!!!..No p/s this would not be too safe if my girlfriend is driving it.
I let it sit for for just a little while and we out and it worked again.
The way it came back as I started it was like it had a bad connection and came to life just as the car started.
Will call the dealer to see if they have seen this yet here in phoenix AZ.......Still Love this car though...lol
