LS3 or L99

Ok, sorry if this is a dumb question, but are the LS3 and L99 different engines? If so, what is the difference? Does the option cost?

L99 is 400hp, only offered on the automatic, and is multi displacement.
Ls3 is 426hp, only offered on the manual, and is not multi displacement. It is the same motor as in the base vette with 4 less hp.

Same series. Different top ends.

Ignore the haters.

Maybe the top end is higher on the stick but the L99 is quicker in the 0-60 which is where most races occur. By the end of the 1/4 the LS3 would win barely but that is all. Both are sweet, but for some reason the LS3 guys typically hate on the L99s just because a few on here have issues. Mine is strong and running the advertised times. Plus modding the L99 will be better in the long run.

Unless you are unlucky enough to have an L99 with the "slows"..

in which case you just have to wait a little bit for the motor to open up.

Yeah, even when tested in much warmer air (87 degrees for the L99 vs 72 degrees for the LS3) the L99 ran pretty much the same time as the LS3 in the 1/8 mile (8.68 vs 8.60) in GM High Tech testing. And the L99 only ran .3 tenth slower in the 1/4 mile. But it obvious the LS3 has more top end by its higher trap speeds (105 mph vs 110 mph). But when looking at those trap speeds you need to take into account the LS3 was tested in air 15 degrees cooler (which is significant and would account for some of that increase in trap speed).

In similar weather conditions (both running in 72 degree air), the L99 would have most likely beat the LS3's time in the 1/8 mile and been extremely close to its time in the 1/4 mile.

The L99 is a strong runner and can hold its own pretty well when matched up against the LS3 in a drag race.

Well if you have been reading many L99's are running very poorly and none of us can get GM to do anything about it. 0 to 60 6 to 7.5 seconds.

define many. 2, 5, 10, 20?

how bout the number of the ones that ARENT having any problems?

what is GM supposed to do about it?

how about the fact that 6 of the top 10 fastest bone stock camaros are L99 A6's?

everyone wants to bitch when a few cars have problems, but no one wants to look at the multitudes of identical cars that are problem free.

Both are great motors..

it really depends on whether you want a manual transmission or an automatic.

Good luck deciding.
