If the base V8 isn't at least 29k, i personally will be looking at a used vette. The V8 HAS to compete with the mustang on the price otherwise its just not worth it for me.

I just read the Road&Track article on the new camaro and it said 20-30k for the base car with either the 3.5 220hp V6 to the mid-level 3.6 with just over 300hp V6. Then to the mid to upper 30s for the 400-430hp SS (which sounds like the base V8). I'm thinking the Z28 will be the top dog supercharged version if they make it with around 500 or so hp. The SS model looks kick-ass, but there is no way I'll be able to afford it. I was hoping to get a base V8 with no options for around 28k, looks like a pipe dream now. I think the 300hp V6 will be the one competing with the mustang gt. Granted the camaro looks better and will probably handle better, but I can't see it being as fast as the mustang being it will be down quite a bit on torque. Looks like I'll go with the gencoupe now or maybe wait and see what the 2010 mustang has in store, but then again with gas prices expected to keep rising, maybe another 4 or a motorcycle...

There will be a lot of ticked off, loyal, Camaro fans who wouldn't be able to buy their V8's. That's all I want. Just my preference. But, I want a V8. GM prices it over $30K base? Ouch...dont' think i'll be able to do it.

220 lb-ft at 1,000 rpm is nothing to sneeze at.

Don't read too much into that Road&Track article. In fact, in might be better if you didn't read it at all and relied on your Camaro info coming from here.

They don't sit in GM's meetings. They don't have a say in pricing. What they CAN do, is speculate, same as us...thing is, we have ~25,000 people reading the site a month, they have millions. So they can't anticipate a 28,000 dollar Camaro SS, just to have the (unlikely event) price actually top 30,000. That could piss off a lot of readers...so they'll guess high, and the truth will come in below it.

Bottom line is, and I keep saying it; it HAS to be competitive with the Mustang. It doesn't matter what power it has, what engine, what standard options, what drivetrain, or what chassis. The base V8 Camaro HAS to be within a couple thousand of a Mustang GT. Or it won't sell, which is contrary to what GM would like to happen with this car, especially in a highly contested market segment.
