squeeky brakes...WTF

Ok so this is my second 5th gen...first was an 11' 1LT RS, now a 13' 1LE....and I am not sure why but my brakes squeek when breaking from a mid teen speed..i have heard it as well from freeway slowdowns too...any one have this annoying squeek? It drives me nuts in my work parking garage...I just do get why with 2 5th gens..and they both had squeeky brakes...

Ours does it some too. I meant to check the brake pad thickness when I had new tires put on it a few weekends ago, but missed the opportunity to check the fronts. The backs looked great. It can be annoying.

Sometimes if the rotors develop a thin layer of rust ,once the brakes are applied this residue can imbed into the pads and glaze them. May have to remove calipers and lightly sand pad surfaces. Another cause is warped rotors.

This is usually my thought process when it comes to squeaky brakes:

1. Check rotors, if they are rusted then clean them or replace as grooves (if a penny is the same width as the groove) develop on the outside.

2. Check pad life. Notice how far the pads are from the wear bar.

3. If 1 and 2 are fine, then take the brake pads out and apply brake lube to the contact points (on the back). This is what fixed my squeaky brakes. Using brake cleaner on calipers help too of course by getting all that old residue off.

I figured with 6k miles on it and not really "racing it" hard braking and all..that pad wear shouldnt be a concern...Ill take the wheels off this weekend and lube the pads..and clean the calipers..see if that helps..Thanks for the replies..

Mine has done it ever since I bought the car with 6k miles on it. When I last replaced my tires at 25k miles I did #3...lasted MAYBE 1000 miles...

Put grease on top and bottom of pad backing plate where it slides on the aluminum caliper.

Performance pads tend to squeel more, nothing out of the ordinary there.

Mine have squeaked since break-in. Not worth fighting, but I hate it just the same.

The comments concerning rust are interesting. I had not heard them before, and since the rotors seem to develop surface rust after a good rain or a car washing (at least down here in the humid south east), I wonder if this is the problem.

I live in dry CA, and my brakes squeak sometimes and not other times. It's annoying but helps that I have NPP with the fuse pulled and no sound deadening in the trunk...

My old 2012 2LS had a TSB for it when I mentioned it to the techs. (for excessive brake noise) Solution was "deal with it!"... Well, if you complained enough they would give ya new pads and even rotors if you take your complainin' that far, but I never bothered. Traded in that car like nine months later anyway. My 2014 2LS has no such issues. So, who knows. Part suppliers change probably on a monthly basis for GM. Who knows what year, model, revision is getting what shoddy parts.
