A6 Missed Shift During 1/4 Mile Pass

I was running my L99 last Saturday at SGMP in Valdosta, GA during the Southeast Area End of Year Blowout. On my last pass of the day the car seemed to miss a shift and may have redlined. It felt like the car went into neutral. It all happened so fast! I thought I tore up the trans so I coasted to the end.

Here are the specs from the beginning of the pass:
60 ft..... 2.101s
330 ft.... 7.415s
660 ft ... 13.899s @ 39.59 mph

Best pass for the day:
60 ft..... 2.057s
330 ft.... 5.679s
660 ft ... 8.652s @ 83.30 mph

I was running with TC and SC off, in M and launching around 1200 rpm.

I am guessing it was the 1st to 2nd shift. I looked the car over and did not see any leaking fluid or broken parts. The trans temp was around 190 deg F normal for the car is around 180 deg F. The car ran fine back to the hotel and all the way home (275 miles) on Sunday. I have not tried to launch the car since the incident. The car has around 6,000 miles to date.

I spoke to "acatlover13" at the track and she said her car may have done it once a while ago.

Anyone else have this problem?

Since then, I've launched hard 1-2-3 and no problems. I also had the tranni flushed & refilled by the dealer previous to the incident.

As others have said, these Autos may not like the heat, but my tran temp gauge read a normal 180 at the time.

Gonna take a chance this weekend weather permitting.

I use D at the track. I don't use M. One reason I don't use M is my car runs great in D, and I might accidentally hit the tap shift if I leave it in M. I actually did that on a run. Just after leaving the line (using M), I must have accidentally hit the tap shift with my finger because my car wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd gear. I had to quickly move the shifter up to D to get the car to shift.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally hit the the tap shift during the run while using M?

Why not just leave it in D??? Are you trying to have it shift at a specific rpm?? I have a feeling it is directly related to that.

D is second gear start out. Use the S mode and don't touch the paddle shifters car will automatically shift and hold the gear longer shift firmer and faster. D is for regular driving and better gas mileage because it starts the car out in second gear instead of first.

D (Drive) always (100% of the time) starts out in 1st gear when starting from a dead stop (full throttle off the line). I've always used D and I've always run very fast 1/4 mile times. In D (from a dead stop), while running wide open, your tranmission will shift from 1st to 2nd gear around 35 mph (5700 rpms). If your car was in 2nd gear it wouldn't shift until after 60mph.

This has been discussed numerous times. There was some confusion (misunderstanding) because of the wording in the owners manual. When the owners manual discusses starting out in 2nd gear, it is describing the tap shift mode (not Drive). Trust me (and the other guys that are into drag racing their L99 A6s), the A6 aways starts in 1st from a dead stop when using D (when running wide open off the line).
