Electric Power Steering Failure

Started it up this morning was fine out of the drive way. Went to the 1st stop light to turn left...had to fight the wheel to turn it (almost to the point it wouldn't turn). While driving it had assist, but the steering felt weird 2nd stop light...same thing....no assist. 10 miles on the freeway it was normal. Get off the freeway, no assist to turn right.

Only thing..no codes or messages. We'll see what it does on the way home.

Great feeling going into a turn and the wheel won't turn...NOT!

My wife's '13 Malibu is going through a weird steering issue too... Hers just feels like it's catching when making small lane corrections. It has the electric steering too. My dealer mechanic is GM Global Certified and says it could be the torque sensors that read the steering going out. There are no codes on it either. They looked up any TSBs or recalls and show nothing either. I was advised to monitor it and if it progresses to get it back in. With nothing there, GM basically can't warranty it until the part goes out or find where the problem is obviously from. They gave me a loaner and it was the exact same as ours. After driving it, I noticed it did it too, just not as bad as ours.

Yours being as bad as it is, you should have no problem getting it fixed!

Well today the steering failed while in a turn and wouldn't come back to center (3 lanes turning left, I was one outside lane) forcing the guy in the middle in the other lane and jamming on his brakes to avoid me from coming into his lane.

I called the service adviser at the dealership to ask if he "ever heard of an electric assist system failing".....said never heard of such a thing. Yet there is 9 pages of threads here, plus stuff on the Cruze websites, etc. I dropped the car off tonight.

If they tell me they can't find anything wrong, Chevy will be eating this car and my lawyer will be in touch.

I am not going to kill myself or someone's family member because the steering works when it wants or goes on vacation, and Chevy won't own up to it.

This is definitely scary. You should pull out your cell phone and record video (if it's safe to do so) when this happens so you have legal proof when it comes time to lawyer up.

This is a known issue and there is a TSB on it. Take it to your dealer.

There are also quite a few threads on this issue as well that may help.

wow, I have a 2004 Malibu (Delphi's first car with electronic steering)... it acts up once in awhile in the winter but not too bad. So one day I'm talking to a Delphi engineering manager about it and explain my issues... he told me he was aware of the problem with their 1st gen design and there was no real fix for it.

fast forward a few years ago and I had to do a little research of the problem on a G6. from what I gathered from GM's explanation to NHTSA, it was a sensor issue. GM told NHTSA yea the power assist can turn off, but you can still steer the vehicle so it's not really that bad.

I figured it was fixed by now???

It's at the dealer now. They called saying "they going to try and reproduce the symptom".

Tick tock.....

Picked up the car.

Spoke to the service adviser who said that it had two codes in the BCM (steering wheel angle sensor and multi-axis sensors), but because they found the ground bolt/wire loose they tightened it up.

He also said that the vibrations from the subwoofer probably loosened the bolt and was causing the codes. I looked at him...like really??? He said "yeah I know, I don't buy it either but I am required to recommend that you remove the subwoofer and CAI for best performance"...shook his hand and left.

I'll drive it the next couple days and see what's up. Hopefully it was just that simple!

I doubt they will but they should be able to download some codes associated with it.
