2SS M6, funny smell after takeoff.

ok, i've been driving manuals for 25+years and have never smelled a "clutch" smell like i do in my 2SS.

i thought it would go away after break-in but i have 4K+ miles on it and every time i slip the clutch a little bit under a semi-hard launch (not drag race fast)
i get this burning smell blown right into my face from the A/C vents... this cant be good for my car or ME!

anybody else experiencing this?

Thanks!

that means that the mirror is 38.75% the size of the vertical windshield...
it sure seems like the ratio could be better... just sayin....

Could be you have a defective pressure plate that is allowing the clutch disc to slip more than normal under load. I suggest having the dealer look at car and go for a demo ride with you. At the very least the dealer can open up a 'ticket' to document the problem for others.

Yup. That's the plan. Just looking for others. Hoping there are not others!

You mention you "slip the clutch a little bit." Your technique maybe the problem. Not to challenge your manhood, but a more detailed explanation of your clutching technique would be helpful.

To do a quick launch, most drivers rev the engine and "dump" the clutch. Dumping the clutch is letting the clutch pedal rise very quickly with your foot still on the pedal. This is in contrast to "popping" the clutch - which is allowing the foot to slide off the clutch pedal resulting in the clutch pedal immediately rising and engaging the clutch disc.

"Slipping" the clutch is a slow raising of the clutch pedal, and will almost always result in high friction and smoke especially if the engine is under high load (revs).

Has your fluid level gone down any? With reports of contamination the components probably need to be inspected to see if there is not some kind of tiny leak somewhere.

Also could just be a clutch disk issue. Would merit an examination. Would not want to speculate beyond that. Back when I worked parts desk I have seen some cheap chinese disks glaze up bad. But don't want to imply that's the problem.

I've been driving a manual for as long as you but I do it for a living, I don't seem to have that problem with our 2SS, but my wife does and she drove a manual for years as well.... not sure, it could be that the car is a bit less forgiving or it could just be an individual issue with your car... sorry, I'm not much help here ....

It's the clutch...bad smell went away after 300 miles but still there on hard launches.

I have 3200 miles on her. To me, normal.

Hmm, interesting. How are the rest of you M6 guys actuating the clutch on take off (hard or normal)? Seems like it could be an issue with my wanting to pick up an M6 and I tend to actuate the clutch more on a dumping fashion (but not severely).

Haven't burned up a clutch in anything I've driven but then again it could be the vehicle just sucking up crappy technique.

If this is only happening when you launch it a particular way- I suggest setting you a/c to recirculate so it doesn't suck in outside air right after you smoke the clutch a little.

I'd have your clutch adjustment checked and then adjust your launch technique.
