Answers To Your Gears and Cam Drive Ability Questions

I had a couple PMs today asking questions about my gears. I finally decided to make a video (low quality) but I hope this answers a lot of questions. I hope you don't get motion sickness!! Look at my sig for my mods.

Thanks to:

ApexSpeed for outstanding customer service with fast shipping on many of my mods including gears
Texas Speed for an outstanding cam and accessories
EFI Alchemy for install and tune

As you can tell from the video, gear noise is at a minimum with my mods. Worst is 81-84mph then is gone by 85mph. Very livable. People should notice less noise without the suspension mods that I have.

Thanks for that video....

I actually wish I didn't see this kind of stuff because it only makes me want to go out and drop the money on gears and an cam.

On a serious note, it was pretty difficult but doable. You are welcome!

Your car has much better driveability than mine. If my RPMs get below 1800 in any gear there is some slight bucking, and lower than that it gets worse.

I've heard that could be the tune that will make/break driveablilty as well.

With an A6 you wouldn't want to go any lower than the 3.73 based on the transmission's gearing. You went from a 3.26 to 3.73 which is a nice jump. On an M6 they come with 3.45 so going to 3.73 is not as big of a jump.

I've heard some say that 4.11 even on an M6 is a bit much. That's why it's nice to the Shark's video.

I'm going to do gears some day but I'm torn for the money. I'm afraid 4.11 might be a bit much and 3.73 not enough. I've heard there is a new 3.90 gear which might be a good compromise.

3.45 to 4.11 in 6th gear increases rpms at 60 by 264 rpm and at 70 by 309 rpms and at 80 by 353 rpms. RPMS at cruise is only a small snapshot of the real change.

To give a clearer picture how this affects acceleration, say you shift (SS w/ M6) at 6200 rpms, the 3:45 mph gear changes would take place at:
1-2 51 mph
2-3 74 mph
3-4 107 mph
4-5 153 mph
on the 4:11 gears the mph at 6200 rpm shift points would be:
1-2 43 mph
2-3 62 mph
3-4 90 mph
4-5 129 mph
5-6 153 mph

So the rear gear change increases the number of gears needed to get through to the same speed and increases how quickly it will get through the gears and increase speed.

The difference in the Tremec 6 (SS) versus the Aisin 6 (LS/LT): This is just to show the difference in transmission gear ratio's not as a one has a better ratio set than the other, just that they are very different and this has an effect on the total gear (through the rear dif) the car will have when swapping gears.

No problem with having the numbers. To the average person, I feel numbers do not mean much. That is why I did the driving video. People can really see how the gears change your shift points and rpms throughout the speed band. Even with the cam, the shifting will be the same except you will be able to use the gears below 1500rpm.
