The year is 2050, will you be able to repair your Gen 5?
With all of the sophisticated electronics on my 2013 SS, it makes me wonder if I will be able to fix anything that goes wrong in 20 or 30 years. With the way software and technology advances, will our Gen 5 be obsolete? Left in the dark with no brain? What if you have a software issue in the year 2050? Your car is brain dead!
The Camaro's of the 60's and 70's will always be able to be repaired because of how simple they are. I for one hope my car will be functioning forever, but I have my doubts. Are today's cars more "disposable" ie, throw them away when your done? |

all you will need to do is to install one of these in the truck.....and then you will have access to all the NOS parts you will ever need.

At this point in my life, I'm more concerned if they will be able to fix me in 2050.

mid 80's were when the ECU and ECM start to show up in cars. the basic technology hasnt changed much. its what all it controls that has. Back then it was strictly engine and trans functions, now days its the entire car |

It really just depends on demand, much like restoration parts now. If there's a big enough following of the car, a company will make the parts for them, even the electronic dodads and gizmos. And if that fails, there's always the carburetor to fall back on, that'd cut down on a lot of needed electronics.
Only time will tell, but I think the 5th gen will have plenty of aftermarket support for many many years to come.

There will be 499,999 of them in front yards on blocks for me to get parts from.

You can still find parts for cars built at the beginning of the 20th century, albeit very difficult. The bigger worry is will you be able to get gasoline in 2050 or will some Washington jackwagons have pushed some law through to make almost impossible for the common man to run an internal combustion engine. Nonetheless, there is always alcohol. They already tried to outlaw that and it did not go so well.
