Are These Test Results True?
I found this on google images when searching "GT500 vs. ZL1." I'm mostly interested in Car and drivers 0-150 times. The ZL1 was half a second behind on it's 0-60 run, okay that's about as expected, a full second behind by 100mph, still okay, as expected, but by 150mph, the ZL1 falls behind by over 4 seconds!? Why does the ZL1 seem to hit a brick wall (according to these stats) by 150mph? Is it a gearing advantage in the GT500? Are the number skewed?

Its got 80 more horsepower and weighs like 250lbs less. Not really confusing?
Like the last row too. Lol. |

Yeah, that's why all the other numbers make sense, but the 0-150 number seems more dramatically different then the other acceleration numbers. That's what I was asking about.

Yeah, that last statistic is why it beats the Ford in almost every head to head test. The Mustang is a pain in the butt to drive when you are not racing and the Camaro is not. If you look at the price as tested numbers in all of those magazines you will notice the as tested mustangs average about $7K more than the Camaros. Pretty much everyone on this board knows that even if you pay a top dollar shop like Hennessey, the 7K package you can get on the Camaro will send the Mustang home with its tail between its legs.... and still be very comfortable to drive.

What Jess said! I know it's the truth because I met a guy at a restaurant last week that parked his GT-500 next to my ZL-1. Real nice guy we talked about our cars for an hour or so and came to conclusion we had the were within $100 of having the amount invested in our cars. I had $100 more in mine than he!!! We then just had to do it!! After lunch we ran them and he couldn't keep up. 0-100 it was close beyond that it was look at my tail lights for him! We ran 3 times and I won all 3! We are meeting up this week for lunch again.

Stock GT500s put out 600 rwhp. The car moves and Ford has that engine dialed in.

these cars dyno almost 100hp apart.
end of story. up at speed the Zl1 was slower than my Z06 and the z06 and GT500 are real similar. add some power and it levels that playing field. adding 100hp to a zl1 is really easy though so it kind of cost vs cost thing. if you want the adjustable bilstien suspension and coolers the ford was $61,450 if you don't care about that and only want to go strait line or roll race the the GT500 is a no brainer to me. it is 600whp stock and can be made 700whp easy. swap the axles and clutch at that point. if you like a more all around drive than buy a zl1 and do pulley, headers, cai, injectors, tune. you can have a 600whp zl1 cheaper than a GT500 with track pack and performance pack. which is why I have a Zl1 and not a GT500. It was a guy from SVT forums that made that graphic and one thing you will notice is even with a 100whp advantage the lap times are very similar. which mean it is much harder to make the ford go fast in the corners. there are road tests he left out of that where the Zl1 spanked the GT500 bad on the road coarse but it was more novice drivers behind the wheel. rule of thumb if are 100hp more and lighter but run the same lap time that is not the easy car to drive fast in the corners.

the GT500 was $61,450 with TP and PP so the cost delta is ~5k with the track upgrade. the GT500 is cheaper if you don't care about those features.

The performance package minus the seats is $3500. The diferences are obvious. The GT500 is lighter and more powerful. The GT500 has taller gearing and requires a stiff suspension to approach the ZL1's handling which makes it less fun to drive around town. The GT500 may be over 200 lbs lighter than the ZL1 but actually carries about 30 more pounds over the front axel. This is why a lighter, more powerful car chews up brakes and struggles to keep up with the ZL1 for anything more than one lap.
To sum it up, if you want an engine looking for a chassis, buy the GT500. If you want a chassis looking for more engine, buy the ZL1. |

Everybody worth their salt is going to mod these cars. Pick your platform and have at it. Want a 1/4 mile weapon only go with the GT500, want something that can do road course and 1/4 mile, get the ZL1. Want more? Win the lottery.
