Victim of the Dreaded Cam Whine
Well I finished installing my cam today and fired it up and I am getting the dreaded cam whine. So I guess I am going to have to call comp in the morning and see if they can send me a new one that is micropolished perfectly and return mine. Car runs perfect and the sounds is dead nuts with the videos posted on YouTube of the sound. Took the belt off as well and the noise is still there. Sucks that I have to redo this job.

If be interested to hear how many people have had this problem. Also anyone have a technique for swapping cams without removing the oil pump again to see the crank mark? When running the ls2 dampener you can't see the crank dot

Try placing the cam dot straight down and making a mark on the oil pump lined up with the dot. When reinstalling the cam sprocket line up the dot with your mark on the oil pump and it should work as long as you do not move the crank.

Good idea. That's what I'll do and prob put a sharpie mark next to where the cam gear mark needs to go.

I've done a few cam swaps without removing the oil pump. You can still see the dot on the crank gear, just takes time and patience to line it up. The worst part is getting the cam sprocket on, but still not that bad.

all they would do for me was re polish mine if I took it out and sent it to them at my expense. According to them it won't harm the engine. I guess going bad in 5000 miles is ok with them. I replaced mine with a Custom Cam Motion. With the bad Comp Truniouns i will never buy anything comp again. those things are only good for 5000 miles too.

Yep I still could see the dot with the dampener. It takes longer to get it dot to dot, like 10mins of aligning things.

Swapping the cam without removing the pump is common. Its not a big deal aligning it.

I have the LS2 dampener and Melling pump. Last cam swap I did I left everything on. Its not that big of a deal.

We'll talk to comp and they are going to make another one and micropolish it. I offered to pay for the new cam and they refund me once I send the old one back. If anyone has this issue you need to contact Greg Rollins at Comp and he will help you out. I found his info looking through some 4th gen forums with the same issue.

There has not been a post on here about cam whine in a long time... Frankly I always do a break in on a cam with BR30 driven racing oil for a couple rounds. Have heard of varied cams doing this years ago. Comp also uses 8620 cores now I believe if asked for ? SO talk to them about the better core, I had no problems with the comp cam I ran from TSP with the basic core. I also always wondered if people who did cams did not over tighten the drivetrain which would still operate on a roller most likely compared to a flat tappet and just press harder on the cam lobes and maybe bottom out the pushrods/springs in the lifters and make it whine from that.....because pushrods length and preload are not so easy on a ls3 and the lifters have to be pumped up and things just right on a LS# engine with rollers compared to old easy SBC/BBC engines flat tappets. ANYWAY just a few thoughts gotta run to work...I would ask for the upgraded core....
