Best Engine oil
Hi guys. Chevrolet in Dubai have recommended that I use 10w-60 for my car with its current mods. Considering how hot it gets in dubai, is it the best choice of oil?

Use whatever it is specified for your engine. I know in Europe and it seem that your part of the world has also adopted the 10W60 mentality. Normally is used for racing applications where alcohol is used for fuel.

5w30 is what your cars oil system was designed for. going heavier will just cause problems a 30w is what you need.

The rule of thumb is never go down in viscosity but you can go up. So don't use a 5w20 or 0w20. .. but it's ok to use a 10w30 or 10w40 |

I think the important point here is that the OP is in Dubai. Due to the extreme heat, the original oil "might" not be the best option. While I usually adhere to the OEM recommendations, I can imagine that it was not designed with temperatures around 120 Fahrenheit in mind.
P.S. that's not including the radiant heat from sitting in the sun or on a smoldering road. |

What does your manual say if you purchased the car in Dubai? Just curious. Its interesting that Chevy would recommend such a heavy oil for an LS engine. Was this a mechanic's opinion or official recommendation?
The oil moves down via gravity to the main bearings from the cam area. Thicker oil may not flow quickly enough. Also the oil pump bypasses at a pretty low psi, meaning that high pressure from high viscosity causes the oil to just get dumped back in the pan. Look for an A3/C3/C4 oil to start, which are available in most 40 grades, and some 30 grades. I would go with a synthetic 5w-40. See this thread he has a similar build: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344840. He started with 15w-50 and had better results with 5w-40.

Not entirely true. I went from 5w-30 to a 5w-20 and my UOA's didn't change. Depends on what your driving style and conditions. This was on my 2002 Silverado with the 5.3. This is in the humid hot part of eastern North Carolina where we see 100° F temps some in the summer. Thicker isn't always better especially to pull heat away from the block. To find the best protection for you specific ride and driving style/conditions, you can't beat trending a few UOA's to set you on the path to a happy healthy engine. What works for one might not work for you to many variables.

I went to 3 different Walmart stores and they were all sold out. I never thought it would be that difficult to find oil, but it is a hell of a deal. I finally found some at autozone for $15 more for the 5qt jug.

This should somewhat settle the OPs question, and debunk the theory of using a thicker oil that is 2-3 viscosity ranges above the recommended viscosity by the OEM. In this case an LS3, L99 is supported by 5W30, but keep in mind not all 5W30 Oils are fully synthetics and maybe blends or not even synthetics at all which these oil do not have as high of a Flash Point as the Full Synthetic.
For example the AMSOIL Signature Series 5W30 has a Flash point tested by the ASTM D-92 at 438 degrees F. And an incredible High Temperature/High Shear Viscosity at 150 degrees C of 3.2... this is a real good test that shows that when high end Oil products are used the results are very well established. |

Redline is a API Group V Esters oil and does not shear. Great oil product with a flash point of 450 degrees F.
