GM Trunion Failure Strikes Again!!

If you have never seen or heard of the GM trunions failing, this is what it looks like. You may notice a slight ticking, which will develop quickly into a loud hammering sound. The following photos show a recent example of what happens. No piston to valve contact, no coilbind issues with the springs, open pressure is under 400lbs, and the valve lift is under .600". For fellow car enthusiasts, the following photos are graphic.

We offer several brands of the Trunion Upgrade kits, and perform the installs here in house. This is the reason we recommend the Trunion Upgrade with every cam we sell and install. The upgrade focuses on replacing the sintered iron OEM trunion with a billet steel trunion, and replace the loose needle bearings with a different design, often a caged needle bearing. Comp Cams, for example, has tested and validated their upgrade kits in their NASCAR GM LS Spec engines.

The cost to upgrade these rockers is minimal in the grand scheme of things, if they are done in time. But if it is too late, like in this case, costs can stack up considerably. Don't let this happen to you.

The Comp Cams trunion upgrade is so cheap that I just don't understand why everyone doesn't do them when they install a cam. For me it is just cheap unsurance to do it anytime a cam goes in. The last thing you want to do is pull needle bearings out of the oil pan on your car.

Is that the stock oil pan plug? Or did you add a magnetic plug.

I sure hope you have all of those needle bearings scooped up.

Plenty of aftermarket ones that are stronger and lighter, have a roller tip and don't cost much more than the trunion upgrade kit. And you don't have the hassle of installing them 16 times.

Also, you can get a shaft rocker kit, where the 2 rockers on the same piston are joined by a single shaft. This adds strength and stability. For $485.

There was a member here who posted here about a trunnion kit failure and in the pics it clearly showed to me and others that he installed the snap ring improperly.

There are good aftermarket option but it is hard to beat the factory rockers with the trunion upgrades when it comes to weight and affordability.

Yells Terra's are notorious for breaking, their spring pressure limit is 400lbs and are heavy. Harland sharp are heavier and Iirc max spring pressure is 400 as well.

This is why I went with CHE precision rockers. Stock rocker, just eliminating the needle bearings all together!

Also decided to go with CHE rockers at the last minute when I did heads and fly-cut my pistons last winter. When I put my cam in the previous winter, I did the Comp upgrade. About a week after I sent CHE my rockers, they called to ask how long I had ran the Comp upgrade and told me the trunnions were excessively worn. The Comp parts only had 2500 miles on them. Apparently, the Comp upgrade can also fail. The bottom picture is from ls1tech and looks like how my trunnions were described by CHE. I also now only use oil with adequate levels of ZDDP antiwear additive (1143 phosphorus/1314 zinc).

I did the Comp Cams trunion upgrade on mine. Very simple to do.
