Rules for Germany
I would ask this in the international forum but, it's relatively dead over there. However, for those with experience with this, please chime in with any experience you may have with the restrictions therein to bring my car to Germany. I'll be stationed at Ramstein AFB and my car is still sitting there with the same mods as per my signature.
I understand that they're awfully strict on sound, emissions, ride height and window tints but, as with any inspection, there are some grey areas. When I was stationed in Japan, I received the same general horror stories about how strict they were. When I got there and experienced it first hand, it wasn't any where near as bad as it was made out to be. Again, any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if it is worse for newer cars or not but I don't remember it being bad at all compared to taking a lifted diesel truck to Hawaii. Hawaii was the worst place in the world for modded anything! I'm so glad to be off that rock! Sorry I was not more help but hopefully someone who has been through the process with a newer car can help you out with some info???? Good luck!!!! |

There's a potential of me being there for quite some time so, I'll have to play nice somehow. Also, gas will be a bit of an issue as far as I understand with the rations in place.

We are much more strict over here generally speaking other than some aesthetic issues like noise. It's much more difficult to take a European car and import it to the US, typically you have to make major modifications to the safety systems and frame to meet our crash standards.
One caveat in Germany is that they see us as driving piles of crap. They take care of their vehicles for the most part and feel like we take the privilege of driving for granted. |

You pay by the liter, not the gallon. Unless you are fueling on a military instillation.

My son didn't think the cost of fuel in town was to bad until he realized it was by the liter, which is a little more than a quart (4 quarts to a gallon)...He buys all his gas on base now unless he absolutely has to. LOL

Just be sure your tires do not protrude out past the fenders too far. I don't remember exactly what the limits are but I know a few guys who had to swap out their wide tires/rims for stock or near-stock ones.

You should be fine as far as fuel rations go. My wife an I just left there in 2014 and we had a Dodge Durango that got horrible fuel mileage. Even with driving it all over the country we never came close to running out of our ration. They have a ration on coffee and hard liquor too, which was weird because you could just go buy it on the economy for a comparable price.

I appreciate the feedback fellas. I'm hoping to find specifics as to what I can basically get away with when it comes to mods. I gather that I'll basically have to bring the car to stock when I first get there for the inspection, which in of itself won't be very fun. Outside of that, I think one of those Forza controllers to keep my NPP closed should suffice for the sound issue - I hope. But once that's all said and done, I'll be a bit depressed if I'm stuck having to keep my car bone stock while I'm out there.

Things must have changed since I was there, I never had an inspection when I brought my car there, just dropped it off in bayonne (they did an external check for damage) and picked it up at Spang. We did have gas "rations" which were not really rations but reduction in price to base prices so we could purchase fuel off base.

How long ago was this? I have a coworker who just came from there that failed with a stock C6 Corvette with a catback.
To be completely honest, this is what I want to do; I want to leave the car as it is, put high-flow cats on there and probably one of those Forza 3-way controllers on my car and call it a day. I know I'll have to scrape the tint off my car but, if that will get a pass through their inspections, I'd rather do that than mess around with putting it back to stock and keeping it that way for the entire tour.
