copper free brakes?

so on my 23 to get rid of a lot of brake dust is there a lot to change over to copper free brakes? I had changed brake pads to get rid of brake dust on my 16 Z06 and it did get rid of the dust it also changed the distance to stop the car.

TIA
Mark

You want to change to copper free brakes to get rid of brake dust? Is that what you're saying?

If so, then that's not going to happen. Copper free brakes still produce the exact same amount of brake dust. Plus to change to the copper free brakes that come as an option now, you'll need to change the rotors, calipers and pads. Because they are slightly bigger to offset the more efficient heat dissipation that the copper brake offer.

You'll need to go with another set of pads like power stops or whatever else is out there. I've only used the stock pads since I don't mind the brake buildup and race the car from time to time.

You will sacrifice braking performance by going to another pad.

If you don't want brake dust and are willing to sacrifice some performance, look into PowerStop Z26 pads. Lots of mentions in the forums, and available on the cheap at many performance parts sites.

If I want to switch to ceramic pads (prefer Akebono) as I might start to daily the ZL1 I’m not sure the part number provided on their website (ASP1001) is actually the correct front pad. I have the copper free brakes.

Since my brakes are slightly larger can anyone confirm if these Akebonos will fit the front? If not, can anyone recommend ceramic pads for my car?

I assume the rear doesn’t matter copper free or not but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

I believe the rears are the same size (rotor, caliper and pad) for the copper free and non copper free.

I cannot speak for the other question about the fitment for the Akebono fronts. Might need to call them and confirm.

I also have BCD option on my car. From what I have gathered, the rears are the same. The fronts are slightly different, running a non copper free pad will result in a cold ring towards the inside of the rotor face. Either pad will work, its just whether that cold ring of 3mm will add increased stress or not to the rotor.

I am sure being that all the collectors editions have BCD, some aftermarket will come out with a replacement that is specific to these copper free pads. I will find the forum thread discussing the pad difference and add it to my comment.

Copper free brakes, isn't that another idiotic California requirement? Personally, I could care less about brake dust, my car gets washed weekly. I want the best performing brake pads and will deal with dust.

CA and WA requirement. It's the same pad just shaped different and no copper in the brake pad itself. Still puts out the same amount of brake dust and supposedly brakes the same.

Correct, I think Oregon as well. I called Akebono and they had no idea about the copper free brakes and just said it’s the same pad. Didn’t instill a lot of confidence.

It's been said that brake dust is largely rotor material, not pad material.

I can't attest to that, but I can say that while my ZL1 (non-California spec) brakes made a whole lot of dust for the initial 1000 miles or so, the production of dust from street driving has greatly diminished since.

BCD option includes the largest production front caliper offered on the 6th gen (bigger than ZL1/1LE) by a little.

You get the ZL1/1LE rear caliper size as well. Overall I consider it an upgrade just in size of caliper and rotors. You can always change out the copper-free pads with something else.

My 23LT1 has the same 4 pot calipers from the SS, but got the C8Z51 rotors and pads for no extra charge because it's a CA delivered car!
