San Diego: Fred's Burgers, Alpine, Saturday 12/04/2010 5pm

Calling all cars!

It's "that time of the month" again...for all classic car enthusiasts (including 2010 and 2011 5th Gen Owners) to meet this - the 1st Saturday of the month - for burgers and fries. Here are the details:

Time: Saturday, December 4th, 2010, 5:00 - 07:00 pm (the Over-The-Hill diehards meet 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month)
Place: Fred's Old Fashioned Burgers, 2754 Alpine Blvd # H, Alpine, CA

The plan is to meet between 4:00 - 4:30 pm at the Mission San Diego De Alcala (10818 San Diego Mission Road, San Diego, CA), then have a fun 30 minute cat-n-mouse drive to Fred's in Alpine (bring your radar detectors and FRS 2-way walkie talkies if you have 'em). Here is the Google route:

Fred's Old Fashioned Burgers, 2754 Alpine Blvd # H, Alpine, CA

If you haven't been to the Mission San Diego De Alcala, there is a 'tricky' but fun (it's gotta be fun, right?) way to get into the "circular patio" parking lot in the heart of the Mission (there is room for 40 cars, I have personally counted the spaces), so unless a wedding going on between 4:00 - 4:30 pm, it will be a blast to meet there and caravan out!

Here is the "back way" in...take Friars Road EAST off I-15 exit, turn right (SOUTH) at light on Rancho Mission Road. Just as the road snakes to your right, look for an almost hidden driveway on your LEFT (EAST side of curve) bordered by trees / bushes, there should be a sign that says "Nazareth Catholic School"...the driveway is only wide enough for 2 cars. Drive to the small parking lot and thru it keeping virtually straight (no sharp turns), go past the basketball courts on your right (road narrows), then past another parking lot on your left...keep going staying right...you should then see an entrance to the Mission's parking lot thru an arched gate (drive SLOW)...if you zoom in all the way in the start of the Google route, look for the circular ring of trees with red "spokes" in the map...that is the place!

If you look at the zoomed in map of the Mission, you will see there is a lower level parking lot for the Mission, and a road UP to that same "circular patio" parking lot in the heart of the Mission, but I have seen the gate there closed when the upper gate has been open (knock on wood). If for any reason that upper 'secret' gate is closed, several parking lots are right there we can start our caravan from!

Entrance: as Rancho Mission Road curves right, just south of Friars Road...
[NOTE: use the single center turning lane on the curve if you are unfamilar with the area]

Left side: Don't worry about the red "Fire Department Access" sign...it doesn't bite...

Right side: "Private Property, No Trespassing" does NOT apply to 5th Gen Camaros...

This was fun last month

Mike,
thanks for posting this.
I had a great time doing this last month and suggest it for anyone who lives in San Diego and wants to meet and greet other car folk attend.
I would also like to remind anyone who goes should bring a place to sit and to dress a for cool weather, it is december and night time.
if you want to enter the raffle i suggest you have a few smaller bills.
John

We'll meet up at the UPPER / hidden parking lot at the Mission, and leave at 4:30pm sharp, unless you or Tim get lost...

I know where its at, if you want to meet up in murphy canyon at the NEX off of Aero and Santo Dr, we can leave from there, only like a 5 minute drive.

Here is the planned location "intel"...

GREEN = the preferred route to circular parking lot
YELLOW = secondary route
RED = "take your chances the gate isn't locked" route

From here, once we get on I-8 East, it is smooth sailing all the way to Alpine!

I'm glad everyone who signed up was able to find the "secret" caravan starting point, did not get a speeding ticket, and won at least a few $s in the raffle!

I had a great time and not just cuz i came out ahead on the raffle.
the cake and ice cream were great even though it was a little chilly after the heaters got put away.
I'm not bragging or Gloating but i almost trippled my raffle outlay.
i guess that paid for gas and my burger too.
i am betting my fines will mount next time i make make it.
