Belly Pan – Cleaner Engine?

Does a belly pan help keep the engine clean? My convertible seems to pick up a lot of road grit in the engine compartment. Do you guys with a belly pans see the same thing?

I think you are correct. I have the pan on my coupe and it stays very clean. Caveat, I have never driven in water or rain but it is dusty and dry as hell where I live in Cali. Still stays spotless.

I copied this from a ZL1 spec sheet. Hope this helps

Belly pans—Under-car aerodynamics are vital for high-performance handling, and the ZL1 has two separate belly pans—one below the engine cradle, the other behind the engine assembly—to help reduce turbulence beneath the vehicle. Transmission-cooling is upgraded at the same time, thanks to NACA-style ducts designed into the rear belly pan.

Belly pan is to keep the wind from causing lift as it comes under the car. Strictly performance aerodynamics not intended to keep motor clean. Verts dont require it as they are speed limited to 150mph. Every oil change a bunch of leaves and bout half dozen cigarette filters come out of my belly pan, its kind of a catchall

Probably more to do with the extra bracing present that doesn't facilitate ease of mounting the belly pan as intended than any speed limitations.

Any change in cleanliness is collateral to its aerodynamic benefit. That being said, I've heard that it does get much cleaner under there after being installed.

A belly pan is on my list of future mods.

I really think it does help keep it clean.

I'd have to say I've noticed it too. While it isn't the purpose of the belly pan, I would have to say that it's a nice I unintended benefit!

Has anyone tried installing a belly pan on a vert, or should In say moding one to make it fit around or over the bracing.

I saw (2) mentioned above, yet, I only have one large that runs from front radiator to just behind the oil-filter/block end... nothing under the trans (although would be hard since the cats extend downward below the level-base of the frame. Possibly LSA specific.

Does also help keep any flying debris from punching up into a line and such. (Now I have noticed you do end up with more captured dirt/dust on the lower flywheel area most likely because of the captured area). Overall I always prefer it, and was said does assist with the overall aerodynamics as intended.

I can see how the belly pan would definitely keep the engine compartment cleaner even though this was not its intended purpose.

Thanks for the responses. I plan to work with a local fabricator to craft something. If anyone has a belly pan on their convertible please post some pictures.

I don't have a ZL1 but I do have the belly pan installed and my engine compartment is 100% cleaner.
