rear end moaning at low speed turns
Sound familiar? L99 2010
Mine seems to be worse the colder the car is and gradually goes to nearly nothing as it warms up (still a little). Loud enough for me to worry a little. Forward and reverse... The car has not been driven much in the 2-1/2 years of owning it (1700 miles, I have more than one toy), so I told myself it just needs driven more, but that may not be correct. A few figure 8's in a parking lot usually solves it quickly. The car has been modified, but nothing in the rear. It isn't a clicking or chunking, but a groan-like noise (almost like someone in the car next to you has a really low note on a large subwoofer coming thru). Anyone? Is this harming anything or just annoying? Could it be exhaust related and not the rear itself (I have stock exhaust from the cats back)? Thanks for any assistance. MP |

I don't know if it's the same thing but my car has a rubbing moaning sound only when backing up and turning. It seems to go away after it's warmed up, kinda strange!

Sounds possible. Mine is a very pronounced droning type noise from the back. Nothing once the wheels are straight and nothing noticed at higher speeds.

Thanks. I just have a feeling if I drove regularly, it would get better. It has sat a lot an gets quiet after driving a short distance. I my get the fluid checked/swapped anyway though. Couldn't hurt... Thanks.

Mine was making a similar noise. The dealer rebuilt the rear end under warranty and no issues since.

Thanks. With the mods I have under the hood, I'm afraid they won't do anything under warranty for the rear, even though I haven't touched anything back there.

Shouldn't matter, the rear is drive train, and any engine mods fall under powertrain, mine is a DD and it made that noise off and on for 5 months before they decided to replace the carrier unit to fix it, been 4 months noise free..Good luck.

I'll give them a call and see. Couldn't hurt. How long is the drivetrain warranty on a 2010? I've had mine for about 2-1/2 years.

I hope that works. I could see their argument as to why their rear end is acting up though if I'm putting too much HP through it.

Not sure on that question, should be 3 yrs or 36000, drivetrain and powertrain.I think. m ine is for 5 yrs..Extended, and the extra power shouldn't make a dirrerence.

What your describing is the clutch type posi unit in the rear. Nothing is catastrophically wrong with your rear end. You can add a bottle of posi additive GM # 88900330, costs about $10 and I bet your noise will subside.

You say it isn't catastrophic, but can it harm it if left alone? I don't drive it much, so if it is no harm, I might not worry too much about it. Heck, it probably hasn't had 6 full tanks in it since buying it 2-1/2 years ago. Is it uncommon for it to be a relatively loud moaning noise when it occurs? I've had LSD rear ends before and nothing sounded like this. Almost like a low volume subwoofer in my trunk holding a single note. Thanks. |

Nothing is wrong, what you are hearing is the slipping and gripping of the friction clutches in the differential. This is a common condition and really not a problem, just a nuisance.
