Thank you all refs & sports officials out there. Without you, no sports. Now we could not have that in the USA now could we! Seriously, you are appreciated. (even if we do give you grief sometimes - just forgive us, we are passionate about our sports).

You can't be a sports official without a thick skin and a sense of humor. I get the biggest kick out of some of the things parents will say. It's also a great way for kids to make a little extra money after high school if they play a sport but aren't good enough to play in college. Most won't last a season from getting pummeled by the parents and coaches, but some will really get a good jump on a long term side career.

I never understood how nutty parents would get until my own daughter played soccer in school. I found myself running up and down the sidelines like an idiot. Then I understood. So I have a better appreciation for parents and their "passion".

Smitty77, I totally agree with you about the thick skin and sense of humor. The beauty of this side profession is that I get to work with guys and gals of different ages. Some are older than me and some are definitely younger. I truly have an appreciation of parents and their passion for their kids. I happen to be one of them! It's so ironic that as officials, we only get remembered for the "bad" calls that we make and not the "good" calls. One of my partners told me something that has stuck with me in my short career so far and that is "No matter what call you make, you're always going to be Half Right and Half Wrong." Hmmmmmm........

The Men's League that I help officiate games for is starting up their Fall League this Saturday, September 24th. There will be a total of 5 games played and I'll be reffing the last 2 of the evening. I also had to pass three exams for the Texas UIL, so now I'm all set and good to go for the upcoming high school season.

Games went smooth this past weekend. Just a few players talking back, but not in a disrespectful way. I was able to keep the T's in my pocket, where I prefer to keep them, instead of having to dish them out.

Reffed 3 games and my IOM got wet from the rain that we're now starting to get down here in South Texas. I'll have to make sure it's cleaned up in the morning before I leave for my business trip to Miami, Florida.

Started off the season tonight with 2 boys' jr. high games in Floresville, TX. All went well...not too many complaints from the players and coaches. It was all in a night's work!! Next up....girls' varsity basketball game tomorrow night between Cornerstone High and Smithson Valley High. It'll be a 3-man crew..

Damn! Blew a blatant carrying violation in tonight's game! Luckily, it was in the first half and was a non-factor in the final score. But, still....always trying to improve and get better. That's the goal...
