I plan on waiting a few months and ordering them through GM.

Just like every other aftermarket goodie out there, I'm sure there will be a ton of knick-knacks for the Camaro. Just try searching for Mustang accessories and you'll find a bunch of cool.... and mostly ridiculous ricer inspired stuff.
Getting the HID's through GM after you get your car might cost more then 1200 for the pair. IMO just get the RS package

If that's the case I'll just go aftermarket.

Please do it right and get the correct housing if you are going to make the switch over to HID. The glare is awful when not done correctly and can be dangerous to other drivers. Doing it right is not cheap. Just my .02

GM HID's will cost anywhere from $500-$600 per side. Most aftermarket units are NOT DOT certified and are ILLEGAL in most areas. These $50-$100 HID's you see on Ebay may look like the best way to go at first glance but you will not be thinking that when you're slapped with a huge fine and facing possible involuntary vehicular manslaughter because your crappy lights blinded someone and caused a wreck. In which case it is YOUR fault for using non-DOT certified equipment.

Ouch that's gonna be a pretty expensive replacement when those baby's burn out. I don't know that much about HID's - what's the expected lifespan?

Don't worry about replacing them. These lights will pretty much last forever as long as the housing stays intact.

Correct. It's more than a bulb replacement, way more. They will last almost indefinitely, if the voltage source is constant/well regulated.

Here's a manufacturer that already has some available, posted by ZombieEatsYou, http://www.prweb.com/releases/2009/05/prweb2405534.htm
Also, Camaro CamaroScotty says he has bought this brand and calls them GOOD quality http://www.cqlight.ca/

free check, eh? $3K off a camaro? tell me more! must one be a resident of Texas or does the car merely have to be purchased in the state of texas??
