Allocation vs. Production

Have been reading the forums but still haven't been able to figure this one out....when placing an order, is your "place in line at the production plant" determined by when your dealer was issued his/her allocation from which you placed your order? Or in other words, if I go to a dealer today and they inform me that they still have allocation left (allocation that was originally issued by GM to the dealer back in 2008) will placing an order under this allocation put me somewhere in the middle of the current production line? Or, would I simply be put at the back of the line (behind the original 15,000+ pre-orders)?

You will slot in based on where you are in your dealer's "line". If he's got 30 and you're #10 you could be "pulled" in a couple weeks. If he's got 6 and you're number 6, it could be July/Aug/Sept...

Welcome, Ed!
TRM0002 is correct. Timing of the allocation back in October has nothing to do with the build sequence. All the allocation cars are to be built by the end of Q3, and most likely before then, so if you occupy the dealer's last allocation slot, your car would be near the end of the 14-15k pre-order cars built. You should still have the car by sometime September, possibly before.

Thanks for the info everybody....I understand the process now. It appears that if you can't get a place in the top half of a given dealer's allocation amount, there's a decent chance that you won't get the car until late summer / early fall. I hate to put in an order and not get to drive very much this summer. Might just wait till next year before buying.

Oh, and by the way, if a dealer gets a new allocation (in addition to the one they originally received in October), would that be for production taking place in Q4 of 2009 and Q1 of 2010, etc?

The original # was a GUIDE NUMBER you could expect to see by 3rd Q3 09. ALLOCATIONs come out weekly based on a monthly CONSENSUS with GM. The guide number is beginning to seem conservative, even in this early phase of production. Life is short, why wait?

OK, so a dealer checks each week to see if they can submit an order to be built the following month. Thus, before placing an order, I could ask the dealer how many orders at the dealership are ahead of me. If there are none, for example, then the next time the dealer gets an allocation slot, my order gets submitted and my car gets built sometime the following month (assuming no current constraints affect my order)....did I get all this right???

Not exactly. For example:

Dealer Estimated Guide Number in Oct: 20 Camaros by Q3 2009
March Dealer Consensus for April builds: 5 of those 20
Dealer weekly allocations are selections of those 5 Camaros broken up over the April build period: 1 first week, 3 second week, 0 third week, 1 last week.

That is just a very vague example of how it goes.

This makes sense. Each dealer gets their monthly consensus and then finds out how this number of allocations (if any) is broken up over the next four weeks).

As that old musical used to go (was it 'My Fair Lady' ?) "I think Ive got it! I think I've got it!"

Two allocations for what? April? Sounds like it would get pulled in April. Or was that his guide number in October? If that's the case look for early summer.

Don't think the dealer does anything after prioritizing his orders. GM schedules them and pulls them later on for production.

A great example of this would be RPO_Z28's thread but specifically reply #347:

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...=14664&page=14

Shows a table of how his four April builds are scheduled out.
