Gas is actually a blend of many different things. Most big companies have a very similar blend though. Mainly you will probably be aware of the change from winter blend and summer blend. They change the blend to leave a better carbon footprint by preventing gas from vaporizing in your tank.

I think there is some crappy gas out there, but that would usually come from a station that has very low turnover in their product (just my opinion). The "Top Tier" gas list is as follows and supposedly are all highest quality gas.
Top-Tier Gas Brands: 76 Stations Chevron Canada Aloha Petroleum Esso Chevron Petro-Canada Conoco Shell Canada CountryMark Entec Stations Exxon Hawaii Fueling Network (HFN) Holiday Stationstores, Inc. Kwik Trip / Kwik Star MFA Oil Co. Mileage Stations Mobil Ohana Fuels Phillips 66 Quik Trip Rebel Oil Road Ranger Severson Oil Shell Texaco Tri-Par Oil Co. U.S. Oil Personally, I buy the cheapest 93 octane I can find in my area (often Murphy USA @ Walmart) and have had no problems with performance.

I use the Murphy gas as well and so far no complaints. I do dump one good tank in there at least once a month of the good stuff just to blow out the Crap and keep the build up to a min... as my DD I do well just to keep her filled up!

In MN anyway, my tuner says he sees the best results from BP and Sunoco premium fuel.

I noticed zero difference in my LS3 between Shell and BJs wholesale gas. I do run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner once in awhile. All gas has EPA require detergent levels.
Direct injection engines won't really benefit as much from higher detergent gasolines since the gasoline never touches the valves. You'd be better off installing a catch can on your direct inject engine and running the cheaper gas I think. For the most part though, the gas itself is no different, the biggest difference is in detergent levels. I've been running the wholesale gas company gas in my vehicles for years and noticed absolutely no ill effects. |

Gas. something everyone is an expert on 'unofficially'.
I'm not an expert, but I'm curious; I've logged every gas fill up in every car i own for the last 4 years; here's a snippet of just two of the cars (2012 Camaro SS - Automatic, based off 91; and 2006 Aveo based off... well, it's an aveo) Ignore Flying J - i logged it for accuracy, but the station took a hit because it was a 46 mile freshly supercharged joy ride... i mean test on closed roads. The "Rank" is based off cost per mile rather than MPG. So, is there a 'best' gas? I don't know, and don't know how anyone would prove otherwise unless you hear knocking or loss of power. |
