Gutted cats, but still the same sound.
I had taken my 2014 SS 1LE to friend's shop to get the cats gutted. I had expected it to get quite a bit louder, but when the rest of the exhaust was connect back and everything was complete it made no difference. I also had read that someone did the same thing, and their sound increased quite a bit. Anyone have any ideas? Is most of the restriction in the mufflers?

Most people that replace them with the cat delete pipes notice an increase in sound and performance.
Why not just delete completely ?? Better yet, long tubes !!!

There shouldn't be much different between gutting the cats, and completely taking them out, right? Haha I'm On too tight of a budget right now for long tubes, but they will definitely happen in the near future

Stock mufflers? The stock system does an amazing job of muffling this beast. If you're just looking for sound a quick muffler delete will wake things up. I would suspect quite a bit since you did the Cat delete.
The next issue you will have will be the rasp from the H pipe.. It never ends... |

The cats are the most restrictive component of the exhaust system. When modding my SS, I first added the FM mufflers (descent sound increase). I then, added the JBA high-flow cats (major sound increase). Lastly, I added BBK headers (very little/if any sound increase). Ditch the stock cats. They are heavy, restrictive and cumbersome. Good luck.
Here's my car with the entire system I just described:

add muffler and resonator deletes and see if that helps.

The flow of the exhaust is different. With the room from a gutted cat, there is a place for the exhaust to have turbulence added, with a straight pipe, it can only go one way.

Motor Trend has a X pipe vs H pipe dyno showdown on Engine Masters, sponsored by Amsoil, loll, but I haven't watched it yet, as I'm waiting for the free episode on YouTube to be posted up in a couple of weeks or so.
