Jack Stands, ok for full support?
hey everyone, i bought a set of Craftsman 2 1/4 ton jack stands today. I started with just the one set preparing for the CAI race scoop install. then, hopefully picking up a 2nd set for exhaust work, painting calipers, etc. I am reading over the instruction/caution manual for the jack stands and they say they should never be used as 2 sets to support both the front AND the back of the car at the same time.
 I thought this was standard procedure... Are they being over cautious, or should I look at a beefier set (more stable???) I tried searching but it pulled up every thread that mentioned jack stands...its a lot... Thanks again guys.

I use 3 ton when I just need to get the wheels off the ground, And 5 ton when I need it up to get the trans out or other work that requires the car to be high off the ground. I dont like extending the stands to high and be under the car, The 5 ton have tall bases so I only have to raise them a couple of notches.

Bigger is better. Cars get a lot more tippy when on four stands, and if your support points are not level the car will slide off the stands. If the drivetrain is out they get real unstable. I've seen a couple come off the stands...scary deal. I use four stands occasionally, but like to have a floor jack under there when able for insurance. And I don't horse anything.

Ok, I definitely do not want to mess with "tippy" while I am under the car. I think I'll use Race Ramps or a few stacked 2x10s (screwed together, no need to start that safety debate again) on two of the wheels (at least). Maybe Jack stands on the other end. Or I may just build some temp ramps for all 4. I guess I bought the jack stands for removal of the wheels (install CAI race scoop & maybe painting the calipers). No need to use the jack stands if working on the exhaust (ie- can leave the wheels on and use ramps).
I just thought that was funny when I read the warning because that's what I thought they were for... I wish my garage was big enough for one of those movable 4 post lifts, man; that would be sweet! http://www.backyardbuddy.com/car-lif...nd-4-post.html

Why not use wheel stands for the front or rear and jack stands together?

one set of ramps and one set of jack stands is what I suggested. With that setup you could be a heck of a lot more stable and then do one set of calipers at a time. Better safe than sorry.

When placed properly there is no safety issue with 4 stands, especially doing something as simple as calipers. There can be a safety issue with anything and is usually attributed to the user and not the tool being used.
If only raising 1 end always use quality solid wheel chocks and parking brake. I would only raise the whole vehicle versus leaving the fronts on the ground. |

Just build your own wooden wheel stands that stack like this
Car isn't going anywhere they lift houses using this method.

Somehow I feel this is getting overcomplicated... Just make sure you are being safe. We can all agree 4 jackstands is not ideal thats for sure.

As long as jack stands are placed at properly spaced points using 4 is fine. Mine is currently sitting 30" in the air on 12 ton jack stands.

Ideally you use a lift. Of course.
But 4 jack stand done properly is perfectly fine. It's all I've ever done. And I've spent DAYS under my cars. Entire suspension and all bushings, drive shaft, exhaust, cutouts, lube etc........ If you do it right and let the mounts cradle the frame bars you will be fine. Just use common sense and as shown in my pictures, leave the jack under as well. 5 points of contact. It isn't going anywhere. be sure your floor jack is rolling like it should to not put a bind on the other stands.
