LS3 CAI MPG loss

Has anyone experienced this? My M6 2SS got 22 MPG on the first tank of gas. I filled up before my Hennessey cold air kit came in. First of all I was disappointed to find out that if you want the air box shield (check the small print on their add) that it is $100 extra. I have read that a CAI filter needs to be protected from direct engine heat for best performance. Well, I installed the kit without the box and now I am only getting 14.2 MPG! Nothing else is any different other than the CAI addition. My buddy who is a sheet metal fabrication specialist is going to make the shield for me. If that doesn't show any improvement, I'll have a CAI for sale cheap! I have had kits on at least five other vehicles and have always experienced either the same or 1-2 MPG improvement, never a loss.

I might affect mpg but not that much, something else is going on. Have you tried resetting the mpg and dirving another full tank.

Why not put the stock one back on and see if it improves.

Maybe you have something else wrong.

I'll let everyone know how it goes, I haven't changed my driving pattern and I did reset my mileage when I filled up. I will also run another tankfull through it.
I don't have my 500 miles on it, so haven't gotten real froggy yet.

You might need a ECM/TCM tune to go with that cai. When some G8s do a cai without a tune you can sometimes loose RWHP and 1/4 time.

I'd go with a Vararam, RotoFab, or New Era cai............

Maybe the MAF isn't properly re-connected?

was just going to say something about this? Does the intake remount the MAF? Could there be some issue with the way it is mounted?

Hey guys... Thanks for the post and the concern... With any performance modifications where you dont have the vehicle tuned, you have to let the car adapt to the upgrades. I usually suggest 50 miles however with a new car under 5,000 miles, it may take slightly longer. You are completely changing the Fuel Trim Adaptives and Volumetric Efficiency of the motor with the addition of Headers or Intake system.

On a side note, we have all added intakes, headers and exhausts to our vehicles and not a single one of us can say we haven't gone out and punched it just to see how the items sound and the seat of the pants performance we can feel! Give it a tank or two of gas. You will see atleast the same MPG if not an increase! Also definitely check that the MAF is installed correctly.

Any additional questions, feel free to call me at the office, 979-885-1300

James

Make sure everything is connected properly. Give your ECM time to adjust to the change (could take up to 200 miles). But most likely, you're just getting on the gas more often than you did with the first tank.

Outta curiosity, you guys gonna make that shield cheaper? $100 is pretty steep for just a heat shield.
