I hate the Aveo
I wanted to share something with everyone in the group about how bad the Chevy Aveo is. I recently purchased a Fiesta sub-compact as my second car in addition to my 1SS for work travel purchases. I drove a 2007 Aveo to San Diego this past year as a rental and it was the worst car I've ever driven my life (I've driven some bad ones). Not only was this Aveo underpowered it had the worst fit and finish of any GM vehicle I've ever have been in. To top it off the manual door lock on the driver side door would not lock, so once I managed to get in place I had to get out the passenger door. I know this is a $11,000 dollar car were talking about but this was piss poor for a modern car.
Soooo.... this brings me to the purchase of the Fiesta. I went to Van Chevrolet in Scottsdale Arizona so I could check out the Aveo since it had apparent (upgrades). Not only was interior still a joke, the powertrain was the same peice of crap from before, and things like ABS were not even standard still. I walked over to the Ford dealership next door and was blown away about how well the Fiesta was put together. Not only was the Fiesta cheaper it had more standard options, plus a much better engine that had more power and was more efficient. I'm fully aware that the Sonic will be replacing the Aveo but it killed me that I had to purchase a non-GM vehicle because it couldn't compete. I'm GM loyalist as my family has worked for the company in some capacity for the past 60 years, but I refuse to buy a bad sub-compact from them when had every opportunity to get it right. Don't get me wrong I love my Camaro but if I can save anyone the pain of having to deal with an Aveo whether it be a purchase, lease, or even rental I feel that I'll have accomplished something.

The Sonic is replacing the Aveo for very good reason.

Probably because its a crappy Korean Daewoo and not a real North American Chevy

Now Daewoo is being rebadged as Chevy everywhere and even though it will be called the Sonic the US market it will still be the Aveo everywhere else. Doesn't bode well for the Beat I would imagine.

All cars are global products these days, but there is something to be said about that. It is too Daewoo for the American market. The styling and quality of the Aveo are behind the times, and an update isn't enough to make up for a generation of mediocre product. GM recognizes this and wants to compete with a superior product, and that is why the new Sonic is what it is.

The Aveo was definitely a big let down. My mom was due for a new car and she wanted to go American and I hoped she would go GM. The Cruze is a great car but just a bit more than she could afford right now. The Aveo is just so cheap in every way I would never let her get one. Luckily we found a used 2008 Saturn Aura with super low miles and a great price (we just about stole it!!) from a GM dealer. She picked it up today and is super happy. I'd rather it was a brand new car but it was in such good shape and such low miles that it's pretty much new. At least the Aveo's on death row and it's replacement looks to be light years ahead of it.

I saw the Sonic at the Barret Jackson new car area a couple weeks ago and I was impressed (for a small cheap car). The interior and exterior is no comparison to the Aveo. I just hope the build quality, power, and economy will match its looks. Should be a home run for GM if the price is right.

The build quality on my brother's HHR seems to be pretty decent

I always thought the HHR had a lot of potential. I'd love to see GM make it a younger, cooler car. Right now, it's bland. What it needs is a body and interior that directly compete with young, hip cars in that size range: the xB, the Element, and the Soul. Even if we don't like those cars, we have to recognize that someone does. I never thought the HHR was a big market car, but it could be an important niche that drives young buyers to the Chevrolet brand. Hopefully, GM recognizes this the same way that GM recognized the need to replace the Cobalt and Aveo.

Apparently GM had decided to abandon the HHR idea altogether.
Although there is supposedly a Volt MPV on the way that would have similar proportions... And I've heard rumors of Chevrolet re-entering the minivan market...

I've taken note of both possibilities. Evidently, Chevrolet executives announced a certain eagerness to dealers about entering the MPV and minivan markets, but most dealers, being themselves, did not notice. I hope GM keeps up the work of hitting young audiences with it's newest products. Most buyers will go for established lines, like the midsize sedan or the 7-passenger crossover. I'd like Chevrolet to keep busy on those fronts and also keep an eye on the same crowd Kia and Scion like to target. Earning their business early could translate into a generation of loyal customers.
