Exclamation Help with Differential Fluid?

I've read the thread on changing the rear differential fluid but am still a bit uncertain as to the type I need.

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...77#post8938077

My manual states:
"Rear Differential Fluid 75W-90 Limited Slip(GM Part No. U.S. 89021677 and Friction Modifier 1052358,
in Canada 89021678 and Friction Modifier 992694)."

But like what do I get? Do I just get the regular GM fluid OR do I need both the regular GM fluid plus the friction modifier plus the limited slip?

Can I get some Amazon or shop links to what you recommend I should get. Like all the fluids I would need. I dont mind if it is RedLine, Mobile or Royal Purple if you have your opinion. I would just like the complete idea as some people say they don't put the modifier in.

Also, what stands or car raises do you recommend I buy? I don't have any and would like to do my own rear-diff fluid changes starting next year (I'm doing my current at a car shop) and would like to have the tools necessary. Some people say they use a hand pump, is this recommended? Also, what is the special tool that is used to loosen those two bolts and can I buy it?

Thank you again!

You can buy the GM ac Delco diff fluid right from Amazon with the friction modifier. The friction modifier is all that you need to add. Just a couple ounces. I forget now. And I just paid my local mechanic 15 bucks for his time to swap it out

friction modifier and limited slip fluid is the same thing. 1qt of 75w90 and 3oz of friction modifier. GM updated it to 3oz of modifier instead of what it had befor. you can use any full synthetic 75w90 and any friction modifier. many performance 75w90 oils come with the friction modifier in it. You will need a hand pump that screws onto the bottle of oil. You use a 3/8 ratchet with out a socket on it for the plugs. remove the fill plug 1st. You will want a low profile jack and a set of jack stand to do it on the ground. All of this can be bought at any auto parts store. I recommend Amsoil Sever gear 75w90 with there limited slip fluid.

Full 1LE suspension, with BMR adjustable sway bars and links, GM aluminum cradle bushings, Hurst shifter with lighter reverse spring, TWM shifter knob, Tick level 1 transmission. I should have bought a ZL1

I used Royal Purple and they say you do not need the friction modifier as the oil includes it but my mechanic added the GM modifier to it since I already had it with the gear kit.

You need to read the bottle label. If it says...contains LS additive... then no need to add more.

I've always use just Royal Purple Max Gear. 75w90. Add nothing to it.

What links are those then? Is it just these?

It is a bit confusing.

Thanks for the help!

What do you mean by pump that screws onto the bottle of oil? Something like this?

Yeah, I was thinking of Royal Purple as it seems easiest.

Amazon says it is not compatible?

Just got back from a local auto dealer my friends recommended me.

They got me a quote where changing the rear differential fluid using the recommended GM oil and friction modifier plus labor will be about $125 total before tax.

I did ask them about using Royal Purple instead but they said that they prefer to use what the manual recommends and I don't have a problem with that.

Is this a good price or should I look elsewhere?

You can seriously do it yourself pretty easily.

All you need is the pump you linked (http://www.amazon.com/Plews-55001-Lu...JD480M3FT7WXGV), 1 bottle of diff fluid (this is what I used http://www.amazon.com/Royal-Purple-P...l+purple+75w90) and a 3/8 ratchet. And a jack and jackstands, of course

Yes, that's the stuff on your Amazon link. Can also be bought at just about any parts store. AutoZone by me has it.

$125 or $15, you make the call.

I don't have any of those parts haha.

My pop has most of those back home where I'll be going in a few months. We'll do the future changes there probably.

Some people say one bottle or quart is enough but others say 2 Quart/bottles? How much did you need?

$125 may not be terrible then. Try calling another place. Do you think you can wait a few months?

You only need 1 quart

Can anyone give me the two Amazon links I need for the GM part?

I see GM oils but none of them match the exact one that is in my manual? I am thinking RoyalPurple as an alternative but I want to see what the manu recommends in the first place?

I don't want to buy the wrong oil.

I see these but the part# don't match.

How about I get these?:

Another guy said he needed more LS/Friction Modifier in his than what Mobile or RP provided? I wouldn't mind getting GM stuff though

Do you guys usually change the transmission fluid as well with the RedLine D4?

I think we've run into an askhole.

I give up. Pay somebody to do it.

Update to say hopefully that wasn't taken seriously. I just get ornery when I haven't had my nap yet! lol
