All-In-One Harness controls Halos, DRLs, & Side Markers

I've received a number of questions from Camaro5 members about the operating modes of the All-In-One Harness that controls Halos, DRLs and Side Markers.
So, I'm starting a thread here in the Lighting Forum for Technical Q&A.

-------------------------------------

The All-In-One Harness has three user-configurable jumper settings so you can set it up to control the Halos, DRLs, and Side Markers on any Gen5 Camaro with the RS package.

The first jumper is used to control Halo operation during the day. When the jumper is on (shorting both pins), the Halos are ON when the Headlight switch is in the AUTO position and it is daytime.

The second jumper is used to control DRL operation during the day. When the jumper is on, the DRLs are ON when the Headlight switch is in the AUTO position and it is daytime. If the jumper is off, the DRLs will NOT be on during the day.

The third jumper is used to control the DRL operation at night. When the jumper is on, the DRLs are ON whenever the HID headlights are ON. This means when the Headlight switch is in the AUTO position and it is nighttime, or when the Headlight switch is in the Manual ON position.

-------------------------------------

The "OEM Sidemarker" version of the All-In-One Harness turns the front side markers into dual-purpose lights.
They are night time Running Lights (standard behavior) AND they are Turn Signals.

Special dual-intensity LED lights are included with the OEM Sidemarker version of the All-In-One Harness. These LEDs replace the stock bulbs in the front side markers, and enable the dual-intensity operation required to turn the markers into turn signals / running lights.

The harness taps into the left and right turn signals to provide the required inputs for this capability. The controller in the All-In-One harness changes the voltage feed to the side markers based on how they must be controlled.

During normal nighttime operation when they are operating in normal intensity mode as side markers, they are driven with +9V DC and have equivalent intensity to the stock marker lights.

Whenever the turn signal is active, the side markers are driven with +12VDC so they operate in High Intensity Mode.

-------------------------------------

The "LED Sidemarker" version of the All-In-One Harness also turns the front side markers into dual-purpose lights.
They are night time Running Lights (standard behavior) AND they are Turn Signals.

The LED Sidemarker version is for Camaro RS Owners with AAC or ShowStopper LED sidemarkers, including the Ghosted and Tinted types.

During the day, the front side markers are normally OFF, and they Flash ON in full intensity mode when the turn sign is active
(daytime behavior is the same as the OEM Sidemarker version)

At night, the front side markers are normally ON in full intensity mode (as running lights), and they turn OFF when the turn signal is active.

The harness taps into the left and right turn signals to provide the required inputs for this capability.

This feature of the All-In-One Harness enables pedestrians, bicycles and other motorists to the side of your car to see that you are going to turn in their direction. With the recessed front turn signals in the Gen5 Camaro, this is a very useful feature.

-------------------------------------

A typical configuration is to have the Halo's ON during the day as the daytime running lights, with the DRLs OFF. However, if you want the DRL's to be ON during the daytime as well, that is a simple jumper change in the harness controller box.

Here is a picture that shows the various operating modes during the day:

-------------------------------------

Night time DRL operation is controlled with a separate jumper as described above. I have mine set up so the DRLs are on during the night when my headlights are on low-beam, and they turn off when my headlights are on high-beam (in some states it is illegal to have Fog Lights and High Beams on simultaneously).

The All-In-One Harness also enables you to add an external switch to control the DRL operation. Here is a picture that shows the various operating modes for evening / nighttime operation:

--------------------------------------

Here is a picture of what the OEM Sidemarker version of the All-In-One Harness looks like:

Note that it includes a pair of dual-intensity side-marker LED lamps that will replace the current factory side marker bulbs in the front markers. These LED marker lights are required to support the dual-intensity operating mode that enables the All-In-One Harness to convert your side markers into combo Running Lights / Turn Signals.

-------------------------------------

For those of you that want to add an external switch, here is an example that shows how to wire up an Oracle On/Off Flush LED Switch:

-------------------------------------

The RS HALO + DRL Harness has all of the same features as the All-In-One Harness, except for the side marker turn signal option.

Pricing information is available in Sponsors Classified Marketplace in the External Parts & Accessories section.

That is a great option, what are halos called by GM? They do not show them in the HID diagram.

Skylane765,

The Halos are on the same circuit as the side markers, and use the same color wire to supply the +12V power feed (Purple for the Driver's side, Brown for the Passenger side).

I couldn't find them on the HID diagram either....

Chris81106,

The "OEM Sidemarker" version of the All-In-One Harness uses a Voltage Regulator to derive a +9VDC power source from the +12VDC signal that normally powers the side markers. This will reduce the current feed to the LED side markers by 25%, reducing the intensity accordingly for operation in "normal" mode (night-time running lights).

Whenever the turn signals are active, the LED side markers are driven with +12V for "high intensity" mode. This will work fine with most aftermarket LED side markers.

The problem will be that the rear markers will be powered by +12V and always operate in high intensity mode, so they will be brighter than the front markers during normal night-time operation. This can be remedied by adding a series resistor to the power signal feed to the rear markers to dim them down by approx 25% to match the fronts. The value of the series resistor will vary depending on the type of LED lights that you have.

EDIT: The new "LED Sidemarker Version" of the All-In-One harness resolves this issue. At night, the LED Sidemarkers operate in full intensity mode so there is no issue with the front markers being dim compared to the rear markers. Then, when the turn signals are active, the LED Front Sidemarkers Flash OFF to provide the turn signal indication. During the day, both versions operate the same -- the side markers are turned on full-intensity when the turn signals are active.

Regards,

Keith

NOTE regarding DRL lights for RS Models:

If you have a 2012 Camaro RS model built in 2011, it may use the
P13W bulbs instead of PSX26W.

See below for a Mechanical Drawing that shows the difference.
To be safe, we recommend that you remove a bulb to determine
which one to order if you have a 2012 model built during 2011.

To remove the bulb from the left side, turn the steering wheel to the
far right and shut off the car. Use a Torx screwdriver to remove the
3 screws holding the plastic fender liner in place.

Pull back the fender liner, and you can reach in to gain easy access
to the rear of the DRL lighting assembly. Squeeze the connector
and pull it back off of the bulb. Rotate the bulb counter clockwise
1/4 turn and remove.

We offer both types in the Sponsor's Classified:

To answer another recent question:

When the headlight switch is in the AUTO position and it is daytime, the normal operation for the RS Package is to turn on the DRLs.

However.... if you have a Manual transmission, when the Parking Brake is ON, the DRLs are shut OFF.
Or.... if you have an Automatic transmission, when the tranny is in PARK, the DRLs are OFF.

The All-In-One Harness and the RS HALO + DRL Harness both use the DRL power feed to drive the Halo's during the day. As a result, the Halos operate EXACTLY like the DRLs do during daytime operation with the headlight switch in AUTO.

The AUTO mode of the RS Headlight package is a very convenient feature, and with the Lite-Right harnesses you can keep your headlight switch set the the AUTO setting all the time. (... and you don't have to drive around during the day with your side markers on because the headlight switch is in the PARK position to turn on the halos that way)

You simply configure the Controller module in the harness (via jumper settings) to independently control whether the Halos and DRLs are ON or OFF during the AUTO/Daytime mode, and whether the DRLs are ON or OFF during the AUTO/Nighttime mode.

Regards,

Keith

Time for some Market Research on a new version of the All-In-One Harness that is optimized for use with aftermarket LED side markers (but especially the "ghosted" side markers)

Background:
=========
We've had several inquiries about using the All-In-One Harness with aftermarket LED side markers. There are two issues / concerns with operating aftermarket LED sidemarkers in dual-intensity mode:

1. When the LED front markers operate in low intensity mode at night as running lights, and the rears are operating in normal intensity mode, then the LED rear markers will be brighter than the front markers (except when the fronts are signaling a turn).

2. If the LED side markers are ghosted or tinted, they may not be bright enough when operated in low intensity mode.

The current version of the All-In-One harness is optimized for installations using the factory marker lights. The dual-intensity LED lights that are included with the All-In-One Harness have the same intensity as the factory rear markers during normal operation, and they are brighter than the rears when operating in high intensity mode to signal a turn.

Possible New Version of the All-In-One Harness:
====================================
If there is enough interest from Camaro5 members, we will develop a new version of the All-In-One Harness that would operate the front side markers as follows:

1. Daytime operation (side markers are normally OFF)
-------------------------------------------------
Front side markers Blink ON with full intensity when Turn Signals are active.
(this is how the existing version of the All-In-One Harness works)

2. Nighttime operation (side markers are normally ON in Full Intensity mode)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Front side markers Blink OFF when Turn Signals are active.

So, Please let us know if you'd be interested in this type of harness.
If there is enough interest, we will design it and bring it to the market this Spring

Pricing would be the same as the current All-In-One Harness.

Regards,

--Keith
