Broken Starter!

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen to them.
For some reason while I was driving yesterday, my car started to make a squeeling type noise from the front right hand side. As I tried to pull over into a parking lot my stabiltrack warning came on along with the traction control warning light. Pulled over, turned the car off, looked around to see if I could see anything. After not seeing anything, I popped the hood and got a burning smell. Let the car sit for a little while and then tried to start it up. Nothing. The car was not even trying to crank. Turned the key and the instrument panel just went blank. After trying a few more times, called for a tow.

Got the car to my dealer who tried to see if it was a quick fix and he found that the starter tried to crank while I was driving. So now at a minimum, they ordered me a new starter. Today they will see if anything else got damaged and why the starter tried to crank itself. It looks like at a minimum the flywheel is probably damaged as well.

So after 6 days and 200 miles of my new car, I am no driving a HHR

Any one else have this happen?

Wow that sucks man. Certainly not what you expect from a new car. This is the first report I've heard of the starter failing. Thanks for posting this, as others are now aware!

You would think so, but if the service guy at the dealer is correct, apparently not.

I think the lock out is just a relay that opens the circuit from the key switch. There may have been some wires that rubbed through and shorted around the starter.

wow, that's a pretty annoying "bug" I hope this was just an isolated case and other cars won't be seeing this. Sorry it had to be your car though.

Yeah definelty sucks. Hopefully I'll get some more information later on today from the service foreman about anything else that got damaged and when I can expect to get it back. I'll see about some pics of the HHR for you though when I get home tonight.

If the Camaro was out of the questions, then how about letting you drive a Z06... All they could say was "No."

This could be related to the tsb for the battery cable to the starter, some kind of short maybe.
