My Deltran Battery Tender did explode once. I called Deltran in Deland and they did not ask me any questions, instead they said " we will ship you another one". I'm using battery Tenders for many years since the late 80s, and this was the first time mine exploded. So it can happen ... Be careful.

I use Battery Savers http://shop.saveabattery.com/
I really like using the smart cables that tell me it's time to charge them. http://shop.saveabattery.com/SMART-Cables_c13.htm The plug and play access makes using them a snap! Lot's of REALLY GOOD info on their web site! I have no affiliation with this company just a happy repeat customer!

can you still use a car cover when you use a battery tender. Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of any vapors or anything getting trapped under the cover and possibly leading to issues?

The battery is vented to the bottom of the car (or should be). I believe hydrogen sulfide is heavier than air. There should be no buildup under your cover.
I leave my battery tender on all winter while the car is covered. No problems. In fact I have five Deltran battery tenders going right now and I have never had a problem. Your fine.

Worth the money for a good brand. Never had any issues except for frayed wires from someone closing the hood on the leads.

Something to think about here is the condition or age of your battery.
Lots of folks are focusing on the tender but I think the root of the problem was the battery. IMHO - Nothing is smarter than disconnecting it when you are not there and do not need it. Anything designed to be connected to a battery and charge it will do just that. I am re-thinking my just hook it up and leave routine because I recently had a old but good working Optima battery start to vent. At the time it was being charged outside of the car not with a tender and in a well ventilated open space in my garage - luckily my wife noticed it and disconnected it before it started to play with my gas water heater pilot light. I like the idea someone posted about hooking the tender up to a timer so it can not just continuously charge and cook!

I don't understand the reason for a tender. All I've ever done with my antique cars over the years Is disconnect the battery when I store it. In the Spring I recharge the battery and I'm good to go. Never a problem and my batteries last for years. To me, A battery tender is just something else to promote & sell. IMO of course.

I have a bass boat with 4 batteries in it all on a smart charging system. This is my 4 th boat and I have gone through 24-28 batteries in them and only had one blow up and it wasn't during charging. I could see it wasn't getting a full charge but it was last time out for the year so I ignored it planed on replacing all them over the winter anyways. Went out fishing 10 minutes in one my trolling batteries blew up scared the hell out me. my guess was I had a cracked cell that was dry and over heated during the discharge cycle during use. But never had one blow up while charging the new chargers are very smart and safe just don't cheap out 50$ or more is short money for a safe smart charger.
