Question How much can I do before I need to tune?

Well, I'm still leery on tuning the car unless someone comes out with a 100% method of going to back to stock and being undetectable. I've seen the thread posted earlier, but I'll need to see some more people give it the go ahead before I consider it.

So this is where I stand; I have the Noweeds cutouts already installed. The car sounds amazing. I'm planning on getting the Vararam intake when it becomes available in September. Both (cutouts and intake) are advertised to work within the ECU's parameters to adjust to whatever changes occur and do not throw any codes.

I'm now looking at headers. Long tubes are out of the question since even high flow cats can throw a code and would need to be tuned out. So that leaves me with the Doug Thorley shorties. My only concern with purchasing these is, will this become the tipping point where I begin to run lean with all this increased airflow? Is it possible with all these bolt-ons that I will need to tune for the car to run efficiently/correctly?

Any suggestions are welcome as I'm nowhere as knowledgeable as some on this board. I know many will say to just tune the car, but as to many others, having that powertrain warranty to lean back is important to those that can't afford to just go out and buy another car. Sorry if that sounds rash, but I don't want to take that risk.

axle backs, underdrive pulleys, i have also heard of non-tune cams. maybe a new air filter, not much you can do without a tune if you want some nice HP gains, even new rear end gears require recal. of the ECU to fix the speedometer.

For anyone that wants to be 100% safe about their full factory warranty, you should limit your mods to a catback exhaust and maybe an intake.

And anything more than just an intake and catback exhaust "should" be tuned.

If you do plan on long tubes (without a tune) I would suggest getting the car on a dyno to make sure the a/f ratio is safe. If you damage your motor because of a lean conditions, your warranty's out the window even if you don't have a tune (if your running long tubes and high flow cats).

Well, I said in my OP that I wouldn't go with LT's and that I would consider shorties. Good idea though to check the A/F ratio after the mods.

GM should eventually come out with their shorties. And if you go with shorties you shouldn't run into any warranty issues as long as you leave the stock cats alone.
But that will keep the HP gains in check.

I put shorties on one of my LS1 z28s (not sure why because I ended up putting cam/heads on the car later) and saw modest gains. But its a good alternative for someone wanting to keep their warranty.

without a tune the torque management will restrict so much. Needs to be tuned to off for real performance gains.

Yeah, its always been my first mod. But I can see why some guys are avoiding it (want to keep their warranty).

But it is by far the best mod for the L99. Just removing the Torque Managment is like adding 30hp to the car.

Get a tuner or get it tuned.

Short of a cam install (small cams may not require one) you really don't NEED a tune. Now if you want to take full advantage of the power on tap...TUNE IT!

Is torque managment calibrated into both the L99 and the LS3?

Yes, but different between the (2) for certain. There is some form of trans/engine torque management settings that can be updated between either one.
