A Pony Car from Hyundai?

I just read this article from the LA Times. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...,6184494.story The author calls the Hyundai Genesis Coupe a "pony car". I was just curious to get everyone's thoughts on what really constitutes a pony car and if the Hyundai can be considered one.

Read and discuss.

It's got my attention. First, and foremost, it's rear wheel drive.

I like the styling inside and out. Hyundai is now making quality cars. (Unbelievable, but true)

It has a V6 and Turbo 4. Tuners are already working on the turbo 4.

It has no huge payload of torque.

It is asian styling rather than psycho-toy styling of Chevy performance cars. (Chevy is more Fun)

Not that fast in stock form compared to Vette and Camaro.

ETC.

I think we need to be open-minded to the possibility of calling an import a pony car. In a market that has had some support for the classic American car, foreign companies are trying to match that American car feel. Many enthusiasts won't tolerate a FWD import, so they're trying to build cars that will beat many of America's classic domestic pony cars. If we're going to call the 1967 Camaro a pony car, maybe we need to include in that class cars like the new Genesis. In order to call the Genesis a pony car, we need to define what a pony car is. Apparently, it must be RWD; it clearly isn't exclusive to the V8 because the V6 Camaro is also a pony car; pony cars apparently have to be 2-door coupes; the torque number hasn't always been more or close to the horsepower number, so that doesn't really matter; it doesn't have to be a top performer since some of America's best performers were pretty mediocre due to initial CAFE regulations. Basically, what I'm saying is that the definition of a pony car may include some imports, and we car enthusiasts need to be open-minded to including other cars in this class.

To me the biggest thing to take into account is the looks and the styling. If the car has the hp, torque, etc of a pony car but has the looks and styling of a tuner, it will always be a tuner regardless of its performance. I have no prob calling a import a pony car but it must fulfill all aspects of the pony car and not just the performance aspects.

Pretty much what I'm saying is if you look at the pics and if they said Chevy Camaro or Ford Mustang would you call it a pony car?

+1
that still looks like FWD car with an inferiority complex (not that i'm saying it's inferior, just describing the styling)

Pony car?.... no, maybe it could be considered a sports car. I consider a Pony Car as a car that is still around from the years of the american muscle car wars. Isnt that where the term Pony Car came from.

^(Zebra) That philosophy is flawed. If the drivetrain of a '95 civic was housed in a 2010 Camaro body, it would be the pony car and vice versa...Blur is correct in saying we need to redefine pony car for a new generation.

The genesis is a coupe with RWD and built for practical performance. It should be tested and compared as such.

Well I didn't expect you to come out with that picture. But Looks don't = performance and drivetrains don't justify trashy body styles. Even if I consider the 1993 Ford explorer to be the golden era of SUVs (I don't), I still have to put the Porsche Cayenne in the SUV category. Which begs the question, is the new Camaro even a Pony car if some only think of the 60's muscle wars deserve that name.
