55k miles and I think my engine just crapped out

Driving home from work just now I am trying to accelerate from an on ramp on to the parkway, suddenly I get service stabilitrak, and the check engine light starts flashing. The car immediately starts running like crap, is down on power and has a very loud tick from the engine. At idle when stopped it barely runs its fighting to keep running, popping shaking and rumbling theres a strange smell coming from the exhaust, its not smoking and it doesn't smell like fuel either I can't even explain the smell but have never smelled it before and I've been around cars for a while. All the gauges look fine, cooling, oil temp, pressure etc.

This car has absolutely 0 mods, dead stock, one of the first Camaro SS's built, religious oil changes every 6k or so miles (when the dash tells me basically).

Anyone? Did I just lunch the motor?

I wouldn't run it. Get it towed to the dealer and wait for the verdict. It sounds like motor damage.

Could possibly be that your cats are stopped up.

Thanks,

Was just wondering if anyone had the same "issue". I'm very happy with how Onstar/ Chevrolet roadside responded, they were very quick and they towed it to my trusted dealer. I am sure they will take care of me, but I will let you know if I need any help.

I was thinking that or coil packs as well. But cats usually is gradual, this was like something just let go.

Yes let the dealer look at it and I am sure it will be covered under the 100K powertrain warranty.

If it really is 100% stock, you're still under warranty...bring it to the dealer and ask them to fix it.

Yes it is covered under warranty

The verdict is: collapsed lifter spring. They have the parts ordered and are taking care of it this week.

Has anyone else had their valvesprings collapse? Yeah I know its only 1 but with only 7 months left on my powertrain warranty you can probably understand my concern.

He didn't say valve spring, he said lifter spring.

It's not common with the LS3 engines...but it's not unheard of to lose a lifter spring.

Yes you are right, not valve spring. Not sure why I said that.
