Track Day Today. Under-steer is gone!

Had her out today for the second time on track (road course). First time bone stock, now with my Brembo slotted rotors and Hawk pads (Fronts), Savini's, Nitto NT05s, exhaust mods and Pfadt sway bars. Under steer is non existent and the car handled beautifully. Much more precise with the NT05s and the Pfadt sways certainly helped make for a very well balanced ride.

This was originally a Corvette Club event, but they let others in. It was truly fun passing C6s and C6Zs today...No times, but I was considerably faster today versus stock.

My only complaint is on the Hawk brake pads - went with the the street high performance to avoid the noisiness. Mistake. They scared me more than once today and are chewed to crap already (haven't pulled them, but you can see the chunks taken out).

which track did you do? I went to Willow Springs back in May. I have Pedders Track II with stock brake and had no problems shoveling around the track.

Hmmm, seems to be a trend with you I see, the OP basically points out that it is his BRAKE setup that gives him cause for concern yet the obvious plug for Pedders/Stock brakes against his minor Pfadt upgrade/upgraded brakes must mean it his his Pfadt sways causing his braking problems. Seems you have a trend in the Pfadt related threads http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showpo...07&postcount=2

thats because I have Pedders suspension and trying to help others with thier aftermarket setups. I'm advertising my experience(s) with a certain product(s) for feedback on and off the track. So if you want to accuse me of something, just say it. And if you wanna post my past whatever's, this what I said for aftermarket suspensions: " Whatever you wanna do with your car, plenty of upgrade companies out there." Good job Douche for trying to stir up some shit.

Which Hawk pads did you buy, the HPS or the HP+?

I have front and rear HP+ pads that I'm about to put on my car before I go back to the track next month, my front Brembo pads are down to nothing after two weekends (maybe 600 track miles) at NJ Motorsports Park and Pocono this summer.

I'm planning to try the HP+ out using my OEM rotors, I bought front and rear pads. I also got a set of the stainless steel brake lines to install, since I'm going to be doing brakes anyways.

I spoke to someone at Hawk on the phone, they recommended the HP+ if I was going to drive home in the car and the DTC-30 pads if I was going to trailer the car, the DTC-30 pad has a long warmup for the street.

Do you think your pad chunking was the pads or the slotted rotor? I see a lot of track rats using the el-cheapo NAPA rotors on their C5's - they seem to think that the rotor wears out about the same whether it's a $60 rotor or a $300 rotor.

Good insights...I went with the HPS pads - have to believe it is the fact that they are soft causing the "chunking," rather than the rotors. I warped my stock rotors (with stock pads) after 1 track day...I'll check out the other Hawk option. Thanks!

I have the HP+ front and rear and just added cheapo slotted rotors to the front. I'm doing Sebring in 2 weeks... I'll post up after.

Great that you are getting your Camaro on a road course! I had first hand experience with the Hawk HPS pads on the track. Terrible. The pads have no bite to them so consequently pedal travel feels dangerously long to get the car slowed. My camaro weighs 800lbs less than the new ones, so I don't think I'm as hard on brakes as you guys, but nevertheless, the HPS are unanimously unsuited for track duty.

I've been researching replacement pads ever since.

A lot of the track day guys at corvetteforum.com go with Carbotech or Performance Friction. The Hawk HP+ are a notch up from the HPS but not much better, and dust a whole lot.

Here's some good reading on pads (scroll down quite a ways for brakes):

Couldn't agree more! I noticed the excess pedal travel even on the street. That is what scared the crap out of me a couple of times on track - went deep in with traffic ahead. Thank God they do, eventually, grab...These will definitely be changed out before the next event.

I noticed your handle - sik68. Do you have a first gen? I had a 67 that I built - sold it, unfortunately, There was actually a guy at Thunderhill last Friday in a 69 Camaro - nearly stock! Even had the drum brakes out back...

Yes I have a 68 and I've taken it to Thunderhill as well. Headed back there August 21-22 with NASA. I'm on C5 corvette brakes though; I couldn't imagine trusting drum brakes coming into t10 or t14! I am going to try out the Performance friction (PFC) 99 compound pads, hopefully they're good enough. If you go PFC, Michael @ MBS brakes in Sonoma seem to have the best prices. http://www.motorsportbrakespecialists.com/

There's about 4-5 of us going that weekend, in old muscle cars. It would be good to see you up there.

I haven't run with NASA before - been running with HOD lately. How are their events? Just orders some SS brake lines, and I am actually going to throw my stock pads back on to see how they do with the better rotors. I know they will be better than the Hawks...
