Detailer screwed up my Stripes!!!

So I had my local detailer wax my Camaro and told them not to wax the stripes. They waxed them anyways.... They are flat black and now they are all white and chalky. Is there any way to fix this or am I going to have to buy new stripes?

There is a way to fix it. Try using dawn to wash them or spray an all purpose cleaner on them. Be careful on your paint. make sure you wash the car right after.

Any all purpose cleaner will take the residue off. Adams clear polish is specifically made for vinyl, cleans and protects very well.

This is why its important to research your detailer....

Why didn't you tell the detailer to fix it? It's his problem, not yours!

Ok so I talked to them and they also put armor all on them after they waxed them. If this is fixable I will make them fix it but if it's just gonna get worse they need to pay for my stripes.

OMG! armor all! Quickly find a reputable detailer and just go to them...stay away from the last guy completely....He probably does not have the resources to pay to replace them and if he did it would probably be his cousin who only has experience putting stripes on model cars in his basement.

The white chalky look is more than likely talc which is used as a filler in most cheap wax products. Armor all probably did nothing but make the dark darker.

I would have the car stripped of its wax and start anew. Look to someone who uses quality products from the start and that will say a lot about what they are as a detailer. If they start by talking about the quality of products and are all excited about what they use that is the key.. Good luck I can imagine you are sick from thinking about this.

I'd have to agree. If they used that stuff on your stripes, then they don't remotely touch enough cars to know better. I wouldn't take it back to them. What I would do is wash the stripes with some Dawn in order to strip the wax and garbage off them. If you get Dawn on the paint, it will strip the wax off the paint too.

This is why I learned how to work on my own car. You avoid crap like this.

I haven't tried it, but there's a guy at work that used to run a detailing service until he got too busy and sold it. He said depending on the severity, he uses 303 protectant mostly (he swears by it), but has used Meguiar's Gold Class Trim Detailer or, dig this, PEANUT oil!! His biggest complaint was people bringing him cars that weren't all that well taken care of with badly faded vinyl graphics expecting miracles. He said when he was done, the car still looked weird with super shiny paint and less than stellar stripes. But he did say that he could make mildly faded stripes look nearly new again. I'm not sure about the peanut oil, but I might try the 303.

A few folks have had to deal with this problem. I know some of them used water heavy in dish soap to cut through the wax. Use it on the stripes only.

Peanut oil is the secret behind people who think peanut butter is great for removing wax residue. I cannot for the sake of sanity understand why other folks can't figure that out. I, however, would not use peanut oil for that purpose. There are plenty of other products that won't attract ants that work much better.
