Porting heads with a ported IM

I currently have a PTB, 3/8 black iceolator and a plenum spacer. I ordered the ported IM and wanted to know if anyone knows how much of a difference will it be if I don't port match the heads? I know I would have a heck of a time keeping pieces of metal from getting into the heads so I'm hoping to avoid it. On the other hand, I don't want to put everything together and wonder "what could have been", since I don't plan on taking the IM off again once it's on there. Any info anyone has would be great. Thanks

Ben

check out my thread; http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227224

i was going to do this as well, but after marking the ports, there doesn't seem to be much room for improvement. my guess would be 1-5 hp on the top end only.

the largest ledge was only .065", and that was only partially around the port.

my plan was to put a rag in the port, and then a ball of tape, inside out, that would collect a lot of shavings as well.

to me, it doesn't quite seem to be worth the risk for a couple more hp. the 30 or so i am picking up from the spacer/ported IM will be plenty. now if i was going FI i might want to do it??? just my .02!

That's what I was thinking too. Can't wait to get it and put it on now. Thanks for the opinion!

It may not be a huge difference but you take off such a little amount to reduce turbulence and it was very easy just put a bit of oil on a rag and stuff it down each hole, tape over the rest, and have someone hold a shop vac while you grind and you're golden i had hardly any shavings left on the rag and those i just sucked up before pulling them out. I recommend it, every little bit counts!

i did a tb/IM/spacer at the same time with the ported heads so i can't tell you the exact gains but it felt a lot more beastly haha

It will make a little difference but not the same as something like a 5* angle job with full porting of the head, intake, exhaust, bowls.

It won't make as big of a difference as shaving in your motor will?

That's what I'm thinking. Even if I'm pretty sure I got it all, I'll still wonder. Probably not worth it for a few extra horses. Thanks for all the feedback.
