This happened to me for the first time last week. I was going 70 on the highway about 255 miles into a full tank of gas on cruise control. I was averaging 25 mpg, so I knew I couldn't be empty unless I was dumping fuel on the highway. So, I pulled off to refill the tank. After about 9.9 gallons, it was full again. Fired up the car and the needle went right to full. Luckily, I got a picture of it while it was acting up just in case. Just like you have all found, the dealer won't do anything unless they can recreate the problem in their presence. That makes it really tough when you have intermittent problems. After 4 trips to the dealer for my disappearing HUD they finally replaced it, but only after sending the service guy videos every single time it happened. He eventually got tired of me filling up his phone with video evidence of the failure.
