V6 MT LSD Rear End really Eaton G80 ??
There were 2 threads going on & on about the Limited Slip Differential and in one of them it shows the option code "G80" for LSD in V6 MT, SS AT & MT.
Within this thread, someone stated that the G80 is the problematic "Grenade 80 Locker that is used in trucks since the mid 70's ... but the Camaro should get a traditional Limited Slip like all they have in the past. Is it really an EATON G80 or NOT ?? Also, what size differential is being used ... I.E. 7.5, 7.625, 8.2, 8.5" ?? Thanks, Doug |

It's not a locker in the Camaro so I would say that it is not the G80.

the G80 isnt a locker, its a LSD. the fourth gens came with them and so do the current trucks. I know alot of guys with trucks who grenade tham with little more than stock power, but the camaro being lighter may not have this problem. if it goes in mine ill be going with truetrac unit and some 4.10's while im in there. I mean if its gonna break, its gonna break. just make it stronger

The G80 most certainly IS a locker. It is a mechanical type locker. The reason they grenade is because of the way it locks. It literally slams into the lock mode when the weights deploy. The side gears are both rotating the same speed therefor it's a locker.

The point of this thread, however, is whether or not the LSD in the camaro is a eaton G80 or not.
Personally, I think its just a coincidence of the way the codes were assigned. I do not know what LSD they used though, so it very well could be a G80. - Xanthos

thanks for the correction, i am human. well didnt gm build these rearend to handle LS9 power? im pretty sure thats what i heard, so if that is the case we should be fine. spd98, that would explain why my trucks rearend clunks when gassing it around turns, thanks for the info

Personally though, I won't be complaining if it is the G80. Seems like a good differential overall.

With my daily driving routine, I'd probably not have any problems with it either but figured it would be nice to get the question "officially" answered by someone ... was hoping without a few more pages of discussion by those of us who are not quite sure !!

It's unlikely that the differential is the same in a solid rear axle as in an IRS because of packaging. And the 7.5 inch 10 bolt in the 4th gen did tend to crap out with not much more than stock power or drag radials hooking up

The diff has nothing to do with solid rear axles or not. There are several examples out there of diff's that work in IRS and solid axles. The tru-trac being one.

Well, I don't plan on doing any towing and drag racing isn't my thing - I'm more of a road race kind of guy. And if it breaks, I'll just replace it. *Shrug* I don't plan on going over about 400 horses at the wheels, and since I won't be drag racing (i.e. no hooking up the rear end) I don't see why *I* would have a problem with it.

I do timed laps. Meaning have a rollout for the first lap, start the timer as your cross the finish line from the first lap, and then stop it after the second lap. I would never throw my car around a track with other cars on it. Just WAY too much risk.
