Nope. Johan said it would continue on in the lineup for a few more years.

So, is GM going to get a hot hatch, or do they think that the market is saturated and that would make it unprofitable?

Little late to be getting into the hot hatch market imo. Especially if you aren't going to give it the powertrain it deserves. That's why I grabbed mine from a competitor. That 150hp "turbo" ain't gonna cut it. But for the average buyer the Cruze hatch will likely check all the right boxes.

Since when is it too late to get into the hot hatch market? Hyundai is about to get into hot hatches. It's not too late to get into this market. Ford just brought hot hatches to the States and they are selling nicely. Plus GM has great hot hatches in Europe so they could easily make one here stateside.

The 'hot hatch' has been killed based on what I read this weekend (of course, take it as 'the internet', so I'll leave it there).
We just happened to be out looking at these this weekend, for the wife. She is looking for an upgrade to her Sonic hatch. She loves the Cruze Hathback. More than likely she will be getting one in the next month or so. I think I have learned more than needed on this little car over the past few days. The RS is definitely a good option as far as "sporty" looks. It has a different front and rear bumper than the LT/Premier version. We did not get a chance to test drive one this weekend, as she was on-call and was getting paged while we were looking at them. So maybe next weekend we will get a chance to drive one around a little. Based on the gearing for the Premier, I imagine will be peppy off the line and feel a little sluggish if going WOT on the interstate. But for what it's designed to do, it will fit my wife's needs greatly. She wants something American, sporty, with great gas mileage and a little more comfort/room than her Sonic. Right now, looks like Nightfall Metallic Gray, Premier, RS, Sun and Convenience packages is on her list. Her 2012 Sonic has been a great little car with zero issues and hoping the Cruze hatch will meet those same expectations. |

I think the little blurb about the next gen trucks solves why GM is calling Ford out for aluminum beds...

Googled it and yeah I'll be surprised if it's even RWD. Didn't know it was the Insignia that would underpin it. Seems like a bad choice, but I'll pass judgement once I see the specs

Holdens aren't RWD for the glory of performance. They're RWD because Holden hasn't had the money to retool the factory to build FWD cars, and GM hasn't felt Australia to be worth it to invest money from global operations. Remember, the population is somewhere between Texas & New York state, or a little bit less than the combined population of Ohio & Pennsylvania, or about 2/3 that of Canada. Its a tiny market. Last year, there were 27k Commodores sold. Even if every single potential Commodore customer refused to buy any Holden ever again ... it would get lost in the rounding error of GMs total sales. Besides, with Ford shutting down their operations in Australia at the same time as Holden its not like the is going to be anyone to steal market share away from Holden with another mass market RWD sedan. There isn't going to be an alternative.

There are a lot of angry Australians who have sworn off buying any car that isn't built in their country...but when everyone is pulling out, what choice do you have?
