The weights are actually really powerful magnets, helps keep brake dust from building up on the rotors. haha right...

Is it possible brakes became magnetized, causing weights to separate from wheel?

Wheel weights are lead, which is not attracted to magnets.

(And they wouldn't pile so neatly or be on so many people's brakes.)

I forwarded the pics to Brembo. Just got an email back from them. They state that..
“It’s likely they’re used for noise defeat.
These will often defeat harmonic distortion a.k.a brake squeal.”

What sounds crazy is that GM would use such a "spit & bailing wire" approach to a problem on such a car as the Camaro.

The worst thing that will happen is that your brakes will squeak. If they did, I would be inclined to try some anti squealing paste on the back of the pad or a different pad all together rather than taking what IMO is the easiest and worst fix in adding unsprung weight that effects the suspension and creates an added piece of metal to retain heat in the braking system not to mention the countless posts that correctly surmise that eventually the hear cycles will result in the wieghts separating from the caliper, likely at speed.

As long as GM fixes the problem with a new set of calipers or pads....then I will not complain much...But they have to fix it, no question about that.

No doubt...but keep in mind that alternatives would potentially require more testing and evaluation...procedures that they don't have anymore time for, or risk delaying the car....yet again. This may have been the easiest route, meant to be a temp-fix only.

Has there been any 'official' word, yet?

I thought Scott said that they would rather delay the car a little while longer and bring a better car to market then ship out something that would cause any more "problems". And wouldnt that look pretty bad if they had to recall all SS's for somehting so simple? Ide say test the car a little longer, delay it, do what ever you gotta do to not "cover up" a problem. Sure I really really want the car, but I would be willing to wait.

You thought absolutely right. Scott did say that, and he meant it:
The Camaro will be one of the highest-quality vehicles that General Motors has put out in recent history.

Mine was simply a guess. And on top of that, you're making a lot of assumptions, like this being worthy of a recall. For the sake of preventing another wild "sky is falling" thread...please just wait for the official word
