Ported Oil Pumps

This is for anyone running LS3/L99 engine. Porting a oil pump seems simple from videos and speaking with people who have done the process. It can be done with just a drill and carbine tip. I can't find any threads that talk about people doing this with their stock oil pumps i.e. when they upgrade their heads/cams/supercharger. Why aren't people doing this. Their only a cost is about 15-30 minutes of time vs paying $159.99 - 199.99 for a ported one. Thanks for any input

Most people arent mechanically inclined or have the ability to drill out an oil pump with a carbide drill bit. They also figure, "let someone else do it for me...if there is a problem then they have to deal with it."

It may be simple enough to do with the right tools but knowledge is key when it comes to engines. Something simple and cheap could cost you a new engine if done wrong. It would be a toss up for me to do something like that myself because I have a machine shop and capability to accomplish that task. The problem is my car is a daily driver and I can't afford a costly mistake.

What does a stock oil pump cost verse a high volume?

I heard the high volume pump is a bad route to go. Through testing they uncovered that the high volume pump tends to pump oil to fast running the system dry.

I've run high volume pumps in many cars and never had a problem. Having said that, I don't currently have a high volume pump in the Camaro. Just a ported stock pump I did myself.

I am a firm believer about up grading the oil pump. I just got one from Texas speed for about 150 I think. Will be installed with new tsp cam .

I had a 57 210 with a 396 and a high volume pump, shifting at 7000 rpms, it would lose oil pressure going thru the lights in the 1/4 mile. Had to go to a stock pump and extended the pan 1 inch deeper. no more problem.

I am more than capable of porting an oil pump myself, but for $120 I went with a Melling. Why try to reinvent the wheel?

I can see where running at high RPMs without a larger or deeper pan would cause oil starvation. I wonder, with the LS3 and L99 8 quart pan, if this would be an issue.

Nice 57!

Did you go with a high volume or high pressure pump?

I went with the high volume pump, and I installed the stock pressure spring. People have been running the Melling 10296 pump in LS3 vetts for years without any issues.

I heard that the Melling is the way to go with the LS3/L99.

I'm guessing you've had no problems with oil pressure. Have you gone to the track with it ? Or in other words, any high RPM runs? Just trying to figure out if the pan capacity is sufficient. Thanks
