Okay, so for all of you out there that have been or are a sports official such as myself, here is a tip that I'm sure you have heard before from other officials...."Never engage with a fan. It's not worth it." As you know, as a sports official, you have to have a thick skin and discipline yourself not to let your emotions get the best of you. But, officials are human too. We hear it all the time from coaches, players, and fans. The point of this is that I lost my cool two weekends ago and got into it with a parent/fan. Nothing physical, just verbal jabs. I did 4 games this past Saturday and made it a point to remain calm and just do my job. And I did!!

My Chapter starts training for the upcoming high school season beginning this Saturday at Somerset High School. This will be going on for the next 9 weekends. I also have a mens' league starting up on September 24th. It's going to get busy in ref land!!

I have been reffing high school basketball for over 20 years. Been all over the country - currently in Dallas. I'm a mild mannered person in real life, but a completely different persona comes out when I ref. I take no crap from anyone. Love the game and it allows me to be a part of it. Looking forward to the season starting in a couple months. Texas has some great basketball.

Don't be in too much of a rush to move up the ladder. The higher the level the faster you will have to react and the more skilled the players are, the more likely you will be to anticipate what's going to happen and not see plays through and judge advantage/disadvantage. Not to mention how to deal with coaches effectively. I'm still learning a lot after 20+ years. Experience is everything.

Maybe basketball is different, but...
In my years of officiating baseball, I tried my damned level best to walk away from games with no one remembering I was there... I can only remember a few select games where I had any type of "I aint taking no crap" attitude when I showed up, and those were games where I was personally contacted by the chapter to handle a problem.... One was a game where the coach was in a bad spot with a good athlete with the worst attitude... His mommy was the principle, and daddy was on the school board, which I believe is a conflict of interest anyways, but there it is... Long story short, kid got tossed, daddy was invited to sit on the tailgate of my truck until after the game was over when I could come grant him his wish of kick'in my arse... I invited him to wait for me... mom ended up on review by the School superintendant, dad was escorted off the field property by the sheriff, and the kid was permanently banned from HS sports after going after my partner... physically... He was a senior and actually had collegiate scouts watching him... such a waste... The paperwork after the game took three hours and that much time in phone calls to the UIL... I had fun at games more often than not, and tried to keep myself and my emotions out of it... There are no fans as far as I was concerned.... 95% of the time... though having said that, once in a while there was a memorable one... One guy had me laughing the whole game, he picked on me mercilessly, as well as both coaches, most of the players, and heaven help any other fan that jumped on someone... This guy was quick witted, very well informed, and funny as hell... He actually found me in the parking lot after the game and apologized, and I told him he should be a professional heckler for some pro team... This guy never said the same thing twice, and 99% of what he said I had never heard before... A couple of valuable lessons, I tossed a coach for having his pitcher hit, for the third time, a batter who happened to also be the highschool quarterback that had beaten the other team a few months earlier for the first time in 13 years... I told the coach to go get on the bus... stopped the game, he got the message and left the field... two minutes later the game is back on, and I hear this familiar voice from a little ways behind the left field fence... It was the coach, on top of their bus screaming at me at the top of his lungs... The catcher for the home team asked me if I was going to do anything about that... "uhmmmm, nope... he is exactly where I sent him."... After that, I told them to get in the bus... And, if you ever want to get the goat of an assistant coach... call them a bus driver... I had an assistant coach flabbergasted one time... he had been gritchin about the strike zone the entire game... well, the head coach dropped an F-bomb at my partner, pretty much at the top of his lungs, and so I motioned for the bus driver to come see me at home plate... I promoted him on the spot... He looked at me like I had stolen something... I asked him if he had a problem with me promoting him... he was like what..... I think it was his first year out of college... I told him the real coach was gone, and now he was the head coach... and he needed a new pitcher as well and had just a few minutes to get it together... and that his entire bench was on bench warning... watch the language...

Wow, Robert! You've got some very good stories to tell with your officiating. We'll have to catch up more on this later. As for this particular game, the losing squad was so upset with the outcome, one of the players took the ball and threw it real hard at my legs! Another player came up behind me and started bumping me acting like he wanted to throw a punch! The bad thing is that we didn't have any security at this gym, just the league President and the table crew that runs the gym. I was afraid that this team was going to jump me, so I told my partner we better GTF outta here! This team ended up being banned from the league the following season. As a sports official, I do it for the love of the game and it lets me get some excercise. I'm going to continue being a high school basketball official as long as I can.
