Cam Advice

Hello.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some recommendations for a cam?
I already have the ARH system and Loudmouth 2's installed.
I'm getting a Procharger installed in the next few weeks.
My next step after that would be a cam swap.
I would like to get a cam that keeps the VVT.
If anyone knows what cam would best compliment my setup, please let me know.
Also, what other components would I need to change also?

Thanks.

You should do a cam at same time as procharger and a tune right afterwards. As for reccomendations I would talk to whoever does your work locally, tell them what your looking for out of the car. People could spit cam numbers at me all day long and I don't know what they mean and i am too impatient to study but i talked back and forth with the place doing mine and we agreed on a plan. Second part of your question you will need to new springs and new rods.

Thanks.

I'll discuss this with my speedshop when I drop it off for the procharger.
Hopefully, they can add this to the project and do it all at once.
My goal is to get my car into the 11's.
Hopefully, with these mods, that will get me there?

My $$$$ haven't been finalized yet, I put a 1000 dollar deposit down. I'm doing everything but forced induction. Cam,ported heads, fast intake manifold, throttle body, underdrive pulleys, 160 thermo, cai, and tune. I have a member journal should have all this in about two weeks.

The Procharger, install, and tune should run around $8300ish.
As far as the cam, I haven't discussed it with them yet, but from what I've been reading in the forums, $800-$1000 installed seems to be the norm.
Also, everyone is saying the gains are well worth the price!!

You can but your selection is going to be pretty limited. I know Mast is making cams that still use VVT, Compcams makes a cam phaser limiter kit, don't know if they are making cams for VVT, and I think at least one more shop I can't remember might be grinding cams to use VVT.

Honestly the VVT stuff is just starting to catch on, so your best bet is to call up someone like Mast or Comp and see what they recommend for your setup and goals.

Either that or just rip out all the VVT and AFM stuff and run a traditional LSX style cam. Just go one or the other, if you run a cam not specifically designed around VVT, you are going to have some serious PTV issues and pop the motor.

Comp Cams does have 4 different VVT grinds available for the 6.2L but are not AFM compatible. Here is a link;

http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Browse.aspx

You have to click on the selector above "Camshaft Family" and scroll down to select "GM Gen IV LS VVT"

Thanks again for all of your input.
Definitely want to go with one that keeps the VVT so as not to cause any engine damage.
I planning on having the AFM tuned off during the procharger install.
I hate the popping and burbling it causes with the exhaust.

A new cam is kind of like getting rid of VVT. It makes your cam great at high RPM and reasonable at low RPMs. That is why when you install a cam it sounds the way it does. So installing a new cam would be like installing the second step of a VVT cam all the time.

Thanks again for all the info.

I think I might just holdoff for now on the cam.
I'll talk to my speedshop and let them do some research into it and see what's best for me.
We can always add it later on down the road.
I'm sure we'll be busy enough tweaking the procharger to get the best results!!

A properly designed camshaft profile will wake up that engine with the ProCharger installed. Do this all at the same time.

I would highly recommend removing the VVT system with this type of application since the timing events are critical for the blower to work best and the VVT system may not like the constant movement of these events.

If you're interested in doing this up the right way, contact New Era Performance Parts in Rochester and use their VVT elimination kit and one of my blower grinds. Look what this type of camshaft package did for a G8GT turbo combination.
