Jack stands
Where is the best place under the car to put the 4 jack stands for winter storage?

If you are storing your car for the winter you really don`t need to put your car on jack stands, it won`t hurt the suspension to sit for a few months. I`m not trying to make anyone look uninformed but why do people think if you store a car it needs to be off the suspension? Collectors have cars that sit for years.

I wouldn't bother with the jack stands. It's an urban myth the the tires will get flat spots (used to happen with the old bias ply tires, but not with radials.) You won't harm the suspension either. Put stabilizer in the gas and a battery tender, you'll be good to go in the spring.

its hard to get a straight answer around here with so many know it alls i would put it up too cause of the tires and you might want to mod something under the car while its stored maybe someone will show us, look for exhaust mod pics on the forum some show jackstand locations .

In short jack stands will help the tires, no worries about the suspension. As for loctions for the stands I am not sure since I just picked up my car last Saturday...havent had a chance to look......the car seems to stay in a constant state of motion.

If you look in the owners manual it should show the proper jack points for changing tires.... Use the same spots for stands.... And the extra precautions won't hurt ....

Agreed. It costs NOTHING to put the car up on jack stands on the chance of flat-spotting the tires and it tends to stop the urge to drive in the middle of the winter on roads that "aren't that bad..." dead in its tracks.

Put 1 under each control arm in the front, basically at the bottom of the strut. Put the other 2 under the trailing arms for the rear suspension. Basically you want to keep the tires off of the ground to keep them from flat spotting, but at the same time you don't want to unload the suspension and let it sit like that all winter which is very hard on it. Trust me, definitely do this to avoid flat spots. I have 2 other cars I park for winter, and after I did not use jack stands and my very soft Kuhmo tires flat spotted, I will do it to every car I park from now on. Mild flat spots will go away, but I had a set of tires that I had to replace because of letting it sit all winter.

If the key reason to jack up the car is tire "flatting" and you don't want the suspension completely unloaded, then don't completely unload it. Jack it up enough to take most of the weight off the tires but not enough to lift them off the ground. Pretty simple IMO.

Sorry guys, but the proper thing to do for winter storage is to put the vehicle on jackstands. Not for fear of flatspotting the tires, and not to unload suspension, but to releive the weight off your wheel bearings to prevent flat spotting them. It does happen and it has happened on my camaro after 5 months of sitting in one spot.
So unless you plan on driving it once every few weeks, i would put your car on stands. |
