Indeed, it is! The best manually-shifted R times I've seen are around 5.2 seconds--a full 0.7 of a second slower! I test-drove one of those too--buttery smooth and light, but the factory clutches on them are known to be weak. Plus, I already have one manual car to drive and don't need two.

Absolutely agree with you. I'm not a fan of the newest body style. I miss the older WRX's. Subarus are just uber reliable and their AWD is killer. Toyota needs a hopped up Celica AWD again.

It's not an "auto" that's why. It is a DCT...

Sorry, I should've been a little clearer. I was just using the same vernacular that has been used in this thread approximately 37 times (auto). It is a dual-clutch, shiftable, 6 speed automatic folks.

Ahhhh, the ol' Celica All-trac turbo. I used to lust after those as a kid. 'So rare, they'll probably be collector's cars , if not already... I also loved the ~'92 MR2 turbo as well.

Let's all just remember (not singleing you out) that a DCT is not like a traditional automatic. It does not have a torque converter, and in essence the way it is set up internally is more like two manual transmissions really. We really have come to the point where just using two choices to describe transmissions (automatic and manual) is not quite enough.

Or, as VW calls it, Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).

I haven't been keeping up on the new Supra and NSX chatter, but Japan is due for a come back now that the recession has flattened out.

Well, I just joined you. Last month I bought a Certified Pre Owned '16 R DSG from a local VW dealer (it was one of the Managers car). Had just 3900 miles on it for $34500. Learned a lot about these cars and had no idea what an R was....until I did some research and test drove one. I like that it is an "under the radar" type car.

As it's my daily driver, I swore no mods....that lasted 2 weeks before I had a Unitronic Stage 1+ tune added.

Congrats on the purchase! I love these hatches, but VW never has any incentives on them, so I ended up getting the Camaro. You can make these into monsters; APR stage II, Unitronic etc. Anyone who laughs at these are just ignorant and misinformed

The GTI's are great little cars. I had a 2010 with a tune and it was great DD. Worked amazingly well in the snow too.

Looked at them this past year when I decided I wanted a fun car. Considering my 1SS was close in price...it was a no brainer to get the Camaro.

The R is a big leap above the std GTI. You are going to enjoy it.

I bet those old/rare Celica All-Tracs are worth something now! 'Always wanted to drive one of those...

'Just added the APR Stage 1 ECU & TCU tune to my Golf R on Friday. It should be sitting around 370 hp/383 tq at the crank now, according to their tests. I haven't had much chance to really get on it yet, but it's definitely a nice improvement, so far!
