New 440-hp 5.5 liter Chevrolet V8

Chevrolet is noting the new 5.5 liter engine will be the first application of GM’s next gen small block family. It will be used in the new 2011 Corvette.

Currently the 2010 Corvette and Camaro 5 are equipped with a 430/426 horsepower 6.2 liter V8. While the new 5.5 increase is 10 ponies above the current V8, fuel ecomony should improve. In testing the 2011 Corvette prototype with the 5.5 440 hp engine already matches the 2010 Z06 (500 hp 7 liter) in performance.

This new engine will be used in the Corvette endurance racing efforts as early as the Sebring 12 hr in early 2011.

I wonder what role the new 5.5 engine will play in the Camaro. For one it outperforms the current 6.2 by a bunch.
