Cam and header packages
Alright i asked htown camaros what a good combo would be or what's recommended and they recommended the slayer package from lmr and that's 6k. I was wondering is it honestly worth it? I am looking for cam and header package with maybe a tune. I don't want to order 1000 different parts and search around forever and ever. I have an l99 ss so selection is limited. I'd love some help thanks

Your selection isn't limited at all. In fact, the L99's have more options than the LS3's, when it comes to cams. Most shops will try to steer you towards a LS3 conversion where you can run any LS3 cam you want. You also have the option of keeping VVT and getting a nice VVT cam. There are several nice VVT cams and the benefits of VVT are many. Don't let any of them tell you that VVT is unreliable or bad. AFM is bad, VVT is good. You can "search this forum" for VVT cams, then decide for yourself. $6k for a Cam, headers, CAI, and tune isn't bad at all, depending on the headers you're getting. Most of the headers from the shops mentioned are going to be in the $1k range. A good CAI is going to be $300+. The tune is going to be another $500+. That leaves $4k for the cam, which is probably about right. The one thing missing is the tq converter for your tranny. That's gonna be another $1500+ installed once you add in the tranny cooler. If you're getting a cam of any decent size at all, you're going to need a TC. Rhino, from GPI has a VVT SS2 cam that is stock TC friendly and will put you in the 450whp range. A good TC is recommended though. Rhino is the VVT guru on the board and has the dyno sheets and better yet, track times, to back it up. GPI is right outside Little Rock so it's not that bad of a drive. There have been several Tx guys drive up for him to work his magic.

Look at texas speed and performance for cheap for a cam and kits and Maryland speed for the stainless power header package with cats $ 712. I know I just spent like forever looking all over the net for deals. Then you have to find someone to install it, and according to my gm expert: you don't need to go all wild and do the oil pan drop for the high volume pump, the timing gear should go to three bolt for a three bolt cam with the three bolt g.m. cam gear and install a ls2 style timing chain damper for 19$ instead, and the trunions should be just fine in the stock rockers as that was just a problem with the 2007 ls7 engine a 427.... Mast motorsports was the first with vvt cams look there, and here and find a good mechanic who h.p. tunes on a dyno.
http://www.texas-speed.com/p-249-tsp...t-package.aspx And I am spending $k to get headers and a cam with new springs, a tune, install, and dyno with all the parts sourced by me for my ls3, I used to own a l99. And with a cam you should upgrade your harmonic balancer/dampener as the ones on our cars look more like a pulley than a dampener and vibration is bad especially with a more radical cam and yours is very tame. And do not forget all the little things like $200 in fluids and cam gasket set. You of course if you go to a ls3 conversion will spend bucks to change and ditch the cam phaser vvt /afm etc and the valves are heavier on the auto as the ls3 ones are hollow...just things to consider. Good luck

Phastek has a deal on Stainless Power Headers w/cats plus a CAI Inc intake for just over $1000. I am sure some of the local shops would match that price.

We have a number of deals going on right now to get everyone ready for spring on cam kits, header installs, tunes....you name it.
Depends on what you are looking for as far as the cam setup. I know one guy already touched on it, and with the L99/auto cars the torque converter is going to be one of the limiting factors as far as what you want to do with the cam and vice versa. Like headers you have choices there, just a header and stock mid section, full kit with mufflers...all of that is going to determine how the car sounds and the price point as well. I will say this, you get what you pay for. It is a good idea to shop around but don't just pick something because it is 'cheap'...because that might be all you get....just cheap parts. Hit me up if you want to ask us about any of our setups for the cars. |
